Ann Powers: Man, ‘Idol’ (sort of) felt like Shania

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:21 AM PDT

Shania Twain loves exclamation points! The woman who helped reinvent country music for the age of exurban sprawl and two-income, "The Blind Side"-style families has found success with many songs featuring that peppy punctuation — including her signature tune, the happy update on Mae West and Marilyn Monroe, "Man! I Feel Like Leedwyze3_l1kfginc a Woman!" You'd hope that an episode of "American Idol" dedicated to Twain's music would have had more zing than anything else this season.

Twain's presence Tuesday night did help — this was one of the most enjoyable shows of the season.Yet, as fun as it was, Shania Night still left questions about whether this season's singers really get the point of crossover pop.

On one level, "Idol" did fine by Twain, who's inching toward a comeback after many years out of the spotlight and a subsequent split from her longtime creative partner and husband, the producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. It highlighted the warmth and versatility of her music and her adorable personality. But instead of milking that catalog full of proto-"Sex and the City" empowerment anthems, most of our remaining hopefuls chose earnest love songs representing Twain's power-ballad side. Doing so, they missed the chance to milk the mood that made Twain so important when she emerged in the 1990s: the jaunty self-confidence that helped this Canadian resort lounge singer and her rocker mate invade Nashville and open up country for a new generation.

A couple of would-be Idols did at least seem aware of the new Nashville that Twain, never a fixture in that town, helped usher in. Casey James seemed like the wavy-haired lost twin of Keith Urban, emoting meaningfully on the fairly obscure swooner "Don't!" Performing one of Twain's biggest hits, "You're Still the One," Lee DeWyze offered a vision of what Rascal Flatts might be like with Chris Daughtry as lead singer: scary to some, perhaps, but certainly appealing to the "Idol" voting public.

Crystal Bowersox, as is her wont, went more grassroots by placing herself in the center of a small band and twanging her way through "No One Needs to Know." It was a cute moment: Mama Sox pointed the lyric at her boyfriend, sitting in the audience, and then profusely blushed — identified rightly by judge Randy Jackson as something of a tribute to the neo-bluegrass band Nickel Creek. Who would have thought Twain, so often accused of being plastic, would have been the one to get Bowersox to loosen up and show a little real, sweet emotion? But then, girlfriends' bonds are never that predictable.

Lynche3_l1kfgunc What was utterly expected was a straight-ahead weeper from the now-17-year-old Aaron Kelly, who probably shouldn't have confessed that his version of the rather sexy "You've Got a Way" made him think of his mom. Kelly is vocally excellent, but unsophisticated; his green edge really showed in the presence of the urbane Ms. Twain.

Equally awkward was Siobhan Magnus, who at least tried to steal some of that Shania spark with a very loud rendition of "Any Man of Mine." The judges loved it, but it was one of those overly busy performances that I'll bet will look more chaotic than killer on playback.

The night's most interesting turn came quite by accident. Michael Lynche, staying firmly within his comfort zone of reverently romantic crooning, turned one of Twain's more obscure tunes, "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing," into a weeper that put him nearly in the league of the late Luther Vandross. (Ellen made the comparison in her comments.) The performance had very little of what makes Twain so special: no knowing wink, no intelligent cuteness, just a big, open heart. But it was crossover pop of the first order — a reinterpretation by a singer aware of his own strengths and able to bend a song toward them without breaking it. Simon, oddly, called Lynche's take "girlie." Maybe. But only in a world where "girlie" means powerful and persuasive. Come to think of it, that's the world where Shania Twain lives.

With four Idols sporting new ink, Season 9’s Top 6 talk tattoos

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:21 AM PDT

Pg174633

Life offstage had a theme this week and it was new ink. With a rare day off (which Siobhan Magnus described as "like, a big deal"), four of six Season 9 contestants took advantage of the me time and visited a Hollywood tattoo parlor on Friday night. Naturally, we had to ask what inspired the four to mark the occasion and also posed a question to Casey and Aaron, who sat out the inking: What would they put on their sleeve at this moment in their lives?

Crystal Bowersox: Sporting fresh ink on her left wrist — a beautifully illustrated gadfly-like twist on the classic medical symbol with a syringe down the middle and the words Type 1 Diabetic written across the top, Crystal said she got the tattoo because she is a "diabetic for life" and also "because I am really horrible about wearing medic ID bracelets and necklaces." But beyond practical purposes, Crystal says it sends a message to others and serves as a reminder to herself. "It's important now being in the position that I'm in," she explained after Tuesday night's show. "I have
a responsibility to take good care of myself. There's lots of little kids
out there with juvenile diabetes who need to take care of themselves,
and they need a good role model." As for the art itself, she proudly declared, "I designed my own thing."

Siobhan Magnus: Ever the jokester, Siobhan first tried to convince us she had Michael's and Lee's names written on her butt cheek, leaving "room on the other side for everybody else…. I'm
sorry I can't show you," she said with a straight face." But in all seriousness, she couldn't show us the roman numeral IX she had stenciled on her "hip area," but she could explain the digit's significance: "It's been a really good number for me," said Siobhan. "I was 19 years old when I
tried out in 2009 for season 9. And the more I think about
it, then the more nines come up. Like memory vomit — I was 9
years old when I figured out I loved to sing, and I was born in 1990, I
could go on and on…."

Michael Lynche: Big Mike's gigantic guns both got new decoration. On his left arm, three stars, each about 3 inches tall. On his right: the word "Dream" in script. "They're healing up good," said Mike. "I'm just into reaching for the stars, you know? As silly as it is, I'm reaching as high as you
can go and just dreaming big dreams. I'm sure all of us want to be stars. It resonates in my spirit, so I put it on my arm."

Lee DeWyze: Fans first spotted Lee's adornment at a "Shrek Forever After" screening over the weekend (see it here). Lee explained the symbol: "I got a silhouette of the Chicago flag … [because of] everything that's happened to me there, and that's where this all started for me."

Casey James: When it comes to future tats, the wheels are already turning in Casey's mind. One of which, he teased, involves "a symbol from a movie" on his arm. He later 'fessed up: it's a Star Wars thing, which he'll share with his brother and cousin. "I've got a few [tattoos] drawn up that I'm getting when I go back home," said Casey. "My brother has one on his arm that's my initials on music bars, and I'm going to get his, which is BC."

Aaron Kelly: Though he's now one year closer to 18, Aaron's mom
would likely not approve of a tattoo on her little guy — even if it said
"Mom" — but if he were to go under the pen? "I'd probably go [with
something] like Siobhan's," said Aaron. "But she did a roman numeral IX
and I'd probably get the [number] 9 for season 9 of 'American Idol.' "

Exclusive photo: Allison Iraheta’s birthday dinner with Kris Allen and David Cook!*

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:21 AM PDT

Allisonbday

Allison Iraheta celebrated her 18th birthday one night early, dining at L.A.'s STK with "American Idol" winners David Cook and Kris Allen on Monday evening.

The three, along with Kris' missus, Katy, and members of Allison's management team at 19 Entertainment, presented the birthday girl with a cake replica of the cover to her debut album, "Just Like You," after feasting on the steakhouse's world-class meaty entrees. [*Update: A previous version of this post misspelled Katy Allen's first name.]

Upon exiting the La Cienega hot spot just after 10 p.m., the three were accosted by photographers angling to get a group shot, but not before Cook grabbed the video camera and turned it around on the paparazzi, putting a light-hearted end to Allison's special night. Up next? Independence, adult responsibilities and rent payments. But first, a little jaunt to Asia. Ah, the life of an Idol…

‘Idol’ Monday rehearsals: Lee and Siobhan get cozy, Crystal goes full-on hippie, Casey’s still sexy

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:21 AM PDT

RAY_9505_1

It's getting down to the wire with the Season 9 finale just about a month away, so does that mean the last six standing are letting the competition get in the way of their friendships? Actually, this crop of hopefuls only seems to be getting closer, two contestants in particular. Still, there was an element of staying inside their own heads, ear buds in place to shut out the rest of the world. Either that, or they were just passed out cold.

Read on for Idol Tracker's weekly spoiler-free view from inside the "American Idol" rehearsals, where this week's theme, the songs of Shania Twain, promises to put a kick into Season 9's step (if you need more convincing, check out Brian Mansfield's take in USA Today on "Why Shania Twain makes a great 'American Idol' theme").

No more messing around, it's time for the big notes. An oft-heard criticism of Season 9 is that they lack the oomph of a good belt — and we don't mean the leather kind. We're talking about a monster last note, a long sustain, with vibrato that makes the chairs shake. It seems our top 6 are finally getting the picture, which puts big belters like Siobhan Magnus and Aaron Kelly in a good position, so long as they keep it in key and avoid the dreaded "screech," "scream" or "squeal" label.

Crystal Bowersox embraces her inner — and outer — hippie. With dreads neatly tucked away in a floppy knit hat and rocking a pair of flowery, flowy pants and flip-flops, Crystal was the image of hippie perfection as she worked out individual parts with the many flavors of strings on deck for Shania week. Her personal microphone stand, which looks like it walked right off a Stevie Nicks solo tour and onto the "Idol" stage, was covered with protective material of some sort to keep it from shattering. Of course, only unionized stage crew can actually handle it physically. Imagine that — from stowing your favorite mic stand in the garage to having it gently carried for you on the "American Idol" stage. What a long, strange trip it's been…

And then there's Siobhan… Wearing the same sleeveless denim jacket she sported to the Top 12 party (with the rad Ramones patch on the bottom back), pink high-top sneakers and dark skinny jeans, Siobhan was the spitting image of adorableness, as usual, so you really can't blame Lee DeWyze for cozying up to her in row 3. In my gossip magazine days, one might have been tempted to read into the head-leaning and gentle back-scratching (not to mention the ink still drying from their Friday night tattoo run), but I'll leave that to you all.

Casey James vs. sinuses, round 8. The persistent sinus problem that's been plaguing Casey for weeks is thankfully on its way out, and with hair pulled back in his bunny rabbit of a ponytail, Casey is finally coming around to his full vocal potential. You know what that means? Prepare to be wowed. We actually learned quite a bit about Casey on Monday: that he can play slide guitar really well, and he's also proficient at trumpet and the drums! Just don't hand him a bass. "I'm not a bass player by any stretch of the imagination," he boasted, giving a nod to Rickey Minor, who's pulling out the upright for a couple of this week's performances. He also revealed some of his thinking behind hassle-free hair. For example, he knows it's too long when it's no longer possible to "get out of the shower and put something in my wet hair to fix it." Way to paint a mental picture, Casey. On the flip side, he also proudly proclaimed that he has "never picked on Aaron," In fact, he said the boy wonder was "my favorite kid here." Awww…

It's all about the iNap. Turn the iPod on, tune in and turn off for a while — that seemed the best way to capture some much-needed zzz's while waiting for their fellow finalists to run through their songs at least three times. Lee was all about it; ditto for Michael Lynche and Siobhan who, after tooling around on her laptop and leafing through a magazine, decided to sprawl out across a row of seats. But it was news of a 9:30 a.m. start Wednesday, as opposed to the usual crack-of-dawn call time, that literally sent Casey dancing in the aisles. It's the little things…

The stage stairs squeak! You'd never hear it on a broadcast or even a dress rehearsal, but while Big Mike Lynche contemplated using the moving stairs for his number (the ones that typically open up to reveal the judges or Ryan Seacrest), the massive stage prop was wheeled out and squeaked every inch of the way. What's up, stagehands? Get some WD-40 on that, stat!

Getting to know Sons of Sylvia (a.k.a. Carrie Underwood’s favorite band)

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:21 AM PDT

_U9G4515

We're back to an hourlong results show this Wednesday but one that's
jam-packed with performers. Four, to be exact: Shakira, Rascal Flatts,
Lady Antebellum and Sons of Sylvia.

In the company of such musical heavyweights, you're probably thinking to
yourself, "Sons of who?" as I did upon hearing some guys from
Nashville landed a much-coveted performance slot. But any
self-respecting "American Idol" fan would know this band had they
watched Fox's short-lived attempt at a group version of "Idol" called
"The Next Great American Band." Sons of Sylvia won that show, back when
they were called the Clark Brothers. The prize: management by 19
Entertainment and a contract with Interscope Records.

Don't recall? You're not alone, if ratings were any indication. So here's a primer: One of the trio's
most memorable performances was a bluesy cover of the Rolling Stones'
"Gimme Shelter" (see video below). Amazingly, brothers Ashley, Austin
and Adam Clark, who were raised by evangelist parents, had never heard
the song. Now, in their opening slot for Carrie Underwood, it's a
staple of their set. Talk about coming full circle.

But their family ties reach far beyond TV talent shows. The brothers
Clark are also related to Ryan Tedder, of OneRepublic fame (also signed to Interscope). In fact,
the song they're performing on "Idol," "Love Left to Lose," is one that
Ashley wrote with his second cousin, Ryan. The two are close. Long
before the hit ballad "Apologize" made Ryan a millionaire, the two
backpacked through Europe together and were roommates in Nashville for
years. I asked Ashley about what it was like for him and Ryan in those
early days.

"We used to stay up all night talking, saying things like, 'Man,
wouldn't it be awesome to have a band and play music?' " Ashley
recalls. "I remember Ryan would write for people in Nashville, and they
wouldn't pay him. He would have to leave invoices under their doors."
When Ryan went to L.A. to showcase for labels, Ashley came along to
play fiddle. "We played the Troubadour and the Viper Room. I was
sleeping on his couch out in L.A., and it was a crazy time."

And it's only gotten crazier. Ashley, Adam and Austin were touring
with other artists (Ashley and Austin with Carrie Underwood, Adam with SheDaisy)
when they caught a commercial for "Great American Band" (while watching
"Idol," natch).  With the submission deadline approaching, the three taped themselves jamming in the basement, submitted it, and lo
and behold, not only did they get a call and then a call back, but they
also made it all the way to end and won. Says Austin: "Every day it felt like a crazy
dream that was actually happening." And they're still pinching themselves.

After last week's "Idol Gives Back," Carrie Underwood flew in via
helicopter(!) to tape her introduction of Sons of Sylvia's performance.
Now that's dedication. Tune in and let us know what you think of these guys.

Will he or won’t he? Adam Lambert scuttles Cowell replacement rumors

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:21 AM PDT

That rumor that Adam Lambert will slide into Simon Cowell's seat at the "American Idol" judges' table when Cowell vacates it after this season? Alas, it is false.

"I keep hearing the rumor too. Unfortunately, it's just a rumor," Lambert said during a recent live Web chat with MySpace Music UK. "I would be honored to be asked — but I think at this point I'm just focusing on my career as a recording artist."

The 28-year-old singer, who is heading from London to Amsterdam on Tuesday, probably wouldn't mind finding some time to focus on his love life, either. "I have a fear of being alone — not being alone by myself, but I want to fall in love, and grow old with somebody and I just sometimes get scared that it's not going to happen," he said.

Watch video footage from Lambert's MySpace interview — in which he discusses his admiration for David Bowie, his favorite song to sing live, the artists he's most excited to have played alongside, his most embarrassing moment, why everyone thought he was "weird" in high school, and how he makes rhinestones stick — below:
