‘Idol’ results show minute-by-minute: Sitting shiva for Siobhan

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:21 AM PDT

Pg175838 I may need therapy to get over Wednesday's results. Siobhan Magnus eliminated? Does. Not. Compute. In fact, I was so depressed driving home after the show that I completely missed the turn to my street. So after I cobble together this results show minute-by-painful-minute recap, I'm sitting shiva for the Cape Cod darling who wasn't afraid to take chances and could sing her tail off. Sure, her responses to the judges were sometimes wordy and repetitive, and maybe her money note didn't always hit the sweet spot, but Siobhan has more personality in her pinky finger than Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Aaron Kelly combined, and I, for one, will miss talking to her every week.

But alas, it's the name of the game, so read on for all the offscreen action, including a bonus Lady Gaga post-tape complete with fire-spitting crying angels, lace pasties, black veils and creepy trees.

5:42 p.m. Spotting Crystal's boyfriend taking their son for a spin in his stroller, a quick chat with stage manager Debbie Williams yields some details about the Lady Gaga performance being taped after the show (and airing next week). Namely, that she practiced until 9:30 on Tuesday night, an hour after her scheduled stop time, that the dancers (a couple from "So You Think You Can Dance") are male-on-male and cut like nobody's business and that the performance includes fire, blood and tears in its visually stunning display. Debbie also noted Gaga's maturation as an artist since the last time she performed on the "Idol" stage, especially in the dance department. And Gaga was hoping she'd notice, asking Debbie, "Did I get better?"

5:52 Corey the warm-up guy gets the crowd pumping and explains that only two of the performances will be live on the stage, Rascal Flatts on their own and with Shakira. Sons of Sylvia and Lady Antebellum were taped a few weeks earlier. "It's Hollywood," he tells the studio audience, "you can lie."

5:55 As usual, Kara DioGuardi is the first judge to arrive and she's in very good spirits, as evidenced by the bouncy pony tail and '80s dance. You go, girl.

5:56 Randy Jackson is not far behind. His entrance involves little more than a hand to the sky.

5:57 Ellen DeGeneres is next, garnering the loudest applause, as she always does, and getting the crowd on its feet.

5:58 The Top Six Idols are marched out with Lee looking sheepish, Casey controlled and determined, Aaron smiley, Mike feeling groovy, Siobhan calm and Crystal excited. Still, we all know they're sort of dreading the next hour of their lives.

5:59 With three judges seated at the table and after two false-start introductions, Simon Cowell is still nowhere to be seen. Finally, with 37 seconds until the show goes live, he hurriedly makes his entrance, gets situated in his chair and gives Kara a kiss.

6:00 It's a cold open to a dramatic video package — so moving that Lee is prompted to stand up and watch. Meanwhile, the members of Rascal Flatts are on stage and getting ready to rock.

6:01 Ryan Seacrest mentions Tuesday's vote count of 33 million and it blows Casey's mind as he mouths "wow" to himself.

6:02 As Rascal Flatts kick into "Unstopppable," Ryan sneaks off to side stage.

6:03 Seated on the now single-rowed couch, Mike is grooving again, Crystal claps along and little Aaron knows all the words.

6:05 Rascal Flatts get a standing ovation after their performance, but I'm left a little perplexed as to why they didn't mention that "American Idol's" own Kellie Pickler is opening on their next tour. They made sure to let people know when it was starting, though.

6:06 The Rascal Flatts guys come up to the judges' table for quick hellos and hugs, especially to Kara, who has apparently known them for quite some time. Meanwhile, just behind the country huddle, Ellen walks down to say hi to Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas. Also part of the posse: David Katzenberg, who leans in to shake Simon's hand (what, a billion dollars in that grip?).

6:08 Randy Jackson poses for a quick photo with Rascal Flatts and, soon after, the rest of the judges jump in. With three seconds to air, Rascall Flatts dart out of the studio just in the nick of time.

6:09 It's Ford video time, which means the contestants necks are all craned in anticipation. This week's theme: creatures of the night to the tune of the Bravery's "Believe."

6:11 Big Mike laughs at himself closing the box of pizza marked "extra garlic."

6:12 During the Shrek segment, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas make their way to the stage. Crystal leaps out of her seat to hug Cameron, while Antonio talks to Ryan Seacrest and stage manager Debbie.

6:16 Cameron hangs on to Antonio's arm as they exit stage right, but even though Ryan has started the grouping process, she yells hello to people in the mosh pit.

6:17 The eliminations have begun and Siobhan is moved to the far side of the stage. But notice her position on the couch? Also at the far end. I've said it before, that last seat spells trouble.

6:18 Applause for Aaron Kelly is somewhat tepid. The cheers for Big Mike? Significantly louder.

6:19 The claps for Lee? Even louder.

6:20 Standing next to each other, Lee and Siobhan struggle to keep their composure as the giggles inevitably creep in.

6:21 With Casey at Mike's side, Crystal is last up and looking most confident — though not while wobbling in those high heels.

6:23 With Aaron, Lee and Crystal sent to safety on the couch, the two elders of that group shake hands in solidarity, knowing they survived to sing another week. Ryan hugs the three in danger as the show breaks.

6:25 The commercial break is used as set-up time for Shakira's "Gypsy" as the judges slip out for an extended stretch and the audience sits for a taped performance by Sons of Sylvia.

6:28 Job well done on Ryan's fake throw to Carrie Underwood up above (her Sons of Sylvia introduction was taped last week after "Idol Gives Back," while S.O.S.'s "Love Left to Lose" was recorded early in the Top 12), but viewers may notice the double couches on the side of the stage rather than this week's single.

6:30 Note to self: Plug Idol Tracker's Sons of Sylvia primer in results show recap. Here it is.

6:32 Ryan is getting situated in the audience for his next intro. He runs through his lines as pretty girls look on, clearly impressed. Next up is another taped performance by Lady Antebellum, which means a nice, long break for the judges.

6:35 Debbie reminds the audience that Lady A.'s "Need You Now" is not live: "Sorry, they're on Memorex."

6:37 Mike, Siobhan and Casey carefully climb the stage-right stairs. Once they reach the top, Casey smiles assuringly at Siobhan, while Mike looks zoned out, or in his own head. Ryan's not far behind trying to lighten the somber mood.

6:39 After the tease, the Bottom Three make their way back down as Rascal Flatts sets up for another performance.

6:43 With 15 seconds to airtime, the judges are back and Shakira has "apparently just arrived," announces Seacrest (did her people not factor in L.A. traffic?). We spot her on the side of the stage, barefoot and looking fabulous. She takes position at center stage and waves excitedly to the judges.

Pg175900
6:45
Casey has found a spot on the side stairs from where he can watch the somewhat awkward Shakira Flatts duet. One can't help but notice that singer Gary LeVox has to refer to the teleprompter for the lyrics (and is also having trouble with his in-ear monitor). Maybe they didn't have enough time to rehearse?

6:47 As Ryan chats with Shakira, Aaron, Crystal and Lee appear from backstage. They came out to watch.

6:48 While Shakira and the Flatts have a huge hug fest, the crew forcefully breaks up the moment so that Ryan can get back to the matter at hand: the results.

6:49 With the red light on, Mike is the first to be put out of his misery, as half the studio rejoices and the rest of us take one giant lump to the throat. "No shame in tonight's Bottom Three," he said. True that.

6:52 It's the last break of the night and Siobhan is looking pensive. Lee walks over just as soon as he can to hug his pal, or is Siobhan more than a friend these days? No matter, this Bottom Two is killing him.

6:53 Debbie gives Casey a good-luck squeeze and Ryan pats them both on the back. Siobhan does not look happy, but it's time.

6:54 Lee has his head in his hand and is biting his nails with dread. But it's seconds later when the verdict is announced: Siobhan's going home. Crystal also looks crushed.

6:55 It's completely silent in the studio as Ryan bids goodbye to Siobhan, and Lee is just about ready to run over. But with mic in hand and the show running slightly ahead of schedule, Siobhan has to sing first.

6:57 As Siobhan wails Aretha's "Think," everyone seems to be consoling Lee, while Crystal tries to make the best of it and sings along.

Pg175921 6:58 Mike has his arms in the air for Siobhan's final bow, but she's headed straight to her family in the front row.

6:59 Still more than a minute ahead of schedule, Ryan does his best to fill time with an impromptu Q&A, during which Randy declares that Siobhan will have a future as an artist. Hallelujah to that.

7:00 Running back up to her fellow finalists, Siobhan and Lee share the longest embrace ever on the "Idol" stage, accented by laughs and tears. A minute later, they're off to separate journeys — at least until the "Idol" summer tour comes around.

Next week’s ‘Idol’: Harry Connick Jr. schools the Top 5 in Sinatra; Lady Gaga delivers her ‘La Isla Bonita’

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:21 AM PDT

Pg176018

Next week promises to be another mixed bag of styles. Harry Connick Jr. will serve as mentor to the Top 5 on the music of Frank Sinatra, and, for the first time in "Idol" history, he'll be arranging the songs, writing the orchestrations for the contestants and performing. Who does this guy think he is, Ryan Seacrest?

But as if that's not exciting enough — and plenty would say that another way-before-their-time theme is snoozy indeed — Lady Gaga will take the stage for Wednesday's results show, dashing my hope that she might be a mentor this season. And why not? Gaga's got a virtual monopoly on multiple charts, she appreciates and understands the art of performing, and her voice, in its rawest form, is unmatched. I know from having heard it at Wednesday's post-show taping starring the diva herself.

Here's how it went down (if you want to be surprised by Gaga's "Idol" performance, stop reading):

From the colossal and menacing spiked black trees to the Christ-like disco-silver angel parked outside the "Idol" studio, there was no doubt that Lady Gaga would provide yet another stellar and stupefying spectacle of a performance — starting off with a slowed-down, key-shifted riff from "Bad Romance," then kicking into her latest hit, "Alejandro."

The audience was told ahead of time that they'd have to stay in their seats another hour past "Idol's" stop time for this taping, but in actuality, it was more like an hour and a half. First, the dancers had some practice time, then camera blocking, and 45 minutes later, Gaga did one rehearsal, which garnered massive applause even with no amplification. Suffice it to say, when it came time for the real deal, nearly every jaw in the room hit the floor.

For this performance, Gaga is first seen at the piano shrouded in a black veil and cape and surrounded by 10 shirtless dancers (two are "So You Think You Can Dance" alumni: Mark from Season 4, and Ben from Season 2), wearing black boxer-brief-like shorts. She then marches to center stage, and eventually one of the dancers removes the cape so that Gaga is wearing nothing but glorified black pasties. Her backside, however, is pretty much left wide open.

Leading the pack of emotive male-on-male pairings, Gaga pulls out some impressive moves — including a "Dancing With the Stars"-worthy tango — all the while singing without a single stammer. She did actually trip at one point, likely when her stiletto heel hit the subway-like grate of the stage but, being a consummate pro, Gaga kept going without interruption or a do-over.

For the first run-through, the only special effect we got to witness was fire spewing out of the angel's wings, but for the second try, they turned it all on — dry ice for smoke, a red waterfall flowing down the angel's arms like a chocolate fountain. Presumably signifying tears of blood?

Which immediately brings to mind a Madonna classic: "La Isla Bonita." Season 6's runner-up Blake Lewis and I had this very conversation on Tuesday night. Not only do both songs have a Latin flavor and incorporate Spanish words, but the melody of the chorus also is strangely similar. And then there's Madonna's "Like a Prayer," whose video had the same sort of symbolism: a Christ figure crying. It shouldn't come as such a big surprise. After all, if anyone's poised to carry the Madonna game-changing torch, it's Gaga. So why can't she be a mentor?

OK, enough hinting. How do you think the final five will handle the classic songs of Ol' BlueEeyes? Casey, for one, is already absorbing all things Frank — at Monday's rehearsal, he foisted endless praise on Sinatra's Oscar-winning turn in the 1955 film "The Man With the Golden Arm." An ‘Idol’ goes home, but Randy predicts ‘major career’ ahead

MLB_9321  In a one-hour show that stretched longer than Kara DioGuardi's earrings, another "Idol" hopeful was sent home Wednesday night. America's choice was neither shocking nor expected — after all, as one contestant pointed out before the elimination was announced, there was no shame in coming up short during a week when everyone had turned in a good performance.

But after sitting through a laid-back series of songs by Rascal Flats, Sons of Sylvia (introduced by Carrie Underwood), Lady Antebellum (who briefly cranked up the sense of urgency with their hit "Need You Now"), and then a barefoot, skirt-shaking Shakira with … Rascal Flats again, we finally found out who had been shut out of the final five.

 And that person was …

Siobhan Magnus, who managed to hold it together as her highlight reel rolled, and who belted out the song that made the judges really sit up and notice her way back in the early weeks of the competition, Aretha Franklin's "Think." This time, she seemed to be singing it (Simon might say screaming it) right to the judges, who had been pretty hard on her in recent weeks — or to America, which ultimately had failed to deliver her to safety with their votes.

After Siobhan finished singing, she hugged a woman we assume was her mother, whom the mic picked up saying, "You're still our star." Oh Mom (or whoever you are!), you made us tear up.

But there were words of comfort and encouragement, too, from the judges. Simon, whom Ryan Seacrest insisted that Siobhan hug, despite her obvious reluctance, declared himself to be her fan. Kara told her she was great tonight. Ellen said she'd see her on her show Thursday. And Randy predicted that Siobhan would do great things in music, telling her, "I think you have a major career in front of you."

So, Siobhan, in the immortal words of Teddy Roosevelt, "Keep your eyes on the stars, and your feet on the ground." Or was that Casey Kasem?

An ‘Idol’ goes home, but Randy predicts ‘major career’ ahead

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:21 AM PDT

Siobhan at the Hole show, Shania’s near make-out with Casey and encouragement for Lee; plus burning ‘Idol’ questions

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:21 AM PDT

It was an uplifting night for the Idols. Not only did the Top 6 have the cheeriest "American Idol" mentor ever sitting front and center, singing along, swaying, clapping and crying to their versions of her songs, but the judges clearly took their happy pills earlier in the day, as they foisted praise on all. And there was plenty of off-screen action too, what with the Friday night tattoo expedition and Siobhan's attendance at last week's Hole show, not to mention blowing kisses and dedicating songs from the stage. Read on for the onstage, offstage and backstage scoop directly from the Idols' mouths — one of which did not land on Shania's lips, but could have!

Shania-casey
Casey James on his embrace with Shania Twain? "I would've laid a big one on her."
Never one to shy away from a peck, Casey James says he would have gladly kissed Shania had he heard Simon's encouragement to "give her a kiss on the lips." "I want them to crank up the monitors," he said in faux frustration. "Because if
I'd heard that, I would've went for it and laid a big one on her." As it was, he'll have to settle for simply having her as a fan. "She really liked it, that's the biggest honor of all," he said after Tuesday's show. "I'm a songwriter
myself, so I can only imagine somebody else doing your song…. She wrote those songs, they came from her heart, her passion,
her life experiences…. I'd be cringing if it were me, but she liked it."

Is Shania really as cheery as she seemed on the show? All signs point to yes. Though their interaction with the country star was limited (typically, individual contestants only have about 15 minutes of one-on-one time with the mentors), according to Crystal, Shania "had a great time" on the show. "She expressed that to us
very well. She came backstage and said 'Hi' before the show. She's just a
sweet, positive lady. She's great and we really enjoyed having her."

When Siobhan hit last week's Hole show in Hollywood, did she meet her idol, Courtney Love? "No, I didn't need to," Siobhan, who counts the Hole logo as one of her five tattoos, said sheepishly. "That would be too much at once." As for the concert itself? Shiobhan described her night at the Music Box as "extremely fulfilling." And certainly surreal. "It was one of those moments when you're in the
middle of it and you think, 'How could things get any better?' It was
very emotional…. Her music means a lot to me,
more than I could even describe, so just to have the opportunity to  see her, especially while all of this is happening…. It's
like one of my wildest dreams coming true." Siobhan doesn't rule out a future meeting, though: "It has to be the perfectly right moment."

Was Aaron Kelly's mom in the audience for her dedication? Aaron's mom was not in the studio audience on Tuesday night, but watching the show on TV without knowing a dedication was coming her way. So what did Aaron see in the lyrics that he applied to his beloved mother? "You gave me faith to find my dreams," he explained. "She's pretty much encouraged me. She's been the whole reason that I'm even in this competition, because without her giving up the things she's given up, I wouldn't be here. And then [the line] 'the way you used to hold me,' that could be like when I was a little kid and having her always there for me. She's always given me the strength to keep going in everything that I do."

What did Shania tell Lee after the show? Viewers at home may not have caught this, but as the show aired its final goodbyes, the night's mentor looked to be in deep conversation with one Lee DeWyze. So what did Shania say to to the guy she supported back at the Chicago auditions? "She told me, 'You killed it, you did what I hoped you would do,' " Lee revealed. "She said she really enjoyed it, and it was a pleasure meeting me, and I told her the same, that I appreciated everything…. She seems like she genuinely cares, when she gets involved with something, she puts her everything into it, she doesn't look at this as some blow-off thing…. so it was cool for her to say anything to me after the show."

Top6

How did Crystal handle her first negative critique? With no apologies and a decidedly zen spin. "I love country music and I love the fact that I had the band up there," said Crystal. "I had a great time with this song because it wasn't an over-the-top kind of song. It's a sweet little love song –  a little ditty — so that's how I performed it." When asked about the almighty "money note," she feigned ignorance, but offered: "I'm just trying to do what's best for the music."

What was Big Mike's reaction to Shania's tears? "I could feel it in the
mentor session that it was a heavy song for her," he said, "and that's interesting
to see that even at this point, however many years later, it's
still a heavy song for her. I just wanted to do it justice." To get into the right head space, Mike used an effective method. "I practiced as if [Shania] was
my girlfriend," Mike explained. "That she was the girl I was in love with, it was a hard breakup and I wanted to show her
that I was strong enough to move on, but that I really can't do anything
without you. It was a good night."

What did Casey mean when he said, "I don't think I've sang yet?" "Unfortunately, I've been under the weather for a while," he explains of that nagging sinus problem. "Anybody that sings knows you have to adjust your vocal style to deal with illness. And this time, I was well enough to actually sing out, hold some notes and go some places and do some things that I really haven't done at all the entire competition. And it felt good. I think honestly, a lot of people will be, like, 'Wow, I didn't realize he could sing at all.'"

Pg174643 What does Lee DeWyze have in common with John Mayer?
Besides a scratchy, breathy singing style, the two also both get flack for their facial expressions. How did Lee feel about Simon's criticism? "He didn't say anything bad about the music part of it, and that's what it's about," Lee said with a smirk. "If the best thing you can come up with is the faces I make, I'm happy with that, truthfully. I don't sing in the mirror to myself, I don't pay attention to how I look when I'm singing. I just get up there and sing. One week I don't do anything, I'm not confident enough, and then the next week, it's this. It's always something different, but mostly it's for him to just say something. So I've gotta take it with a grain of salt, be cool, and just move on from it."

Simon's birthing comment — insult or compliment? Either way, says Siobhan, "it doesn't bother me. It's almost, like, if you're gonna compare to something like that, then hell yeah, because giving birth is one of the most beautiful things, and it something only women can do that's one of the biggest miracles ever. I've yet to give birth myself, but I know plenty
of people who have and it's wicked cool. Like singing real loud is wicked cool…. It's better than things Simon's said to me before."
