Happy Birthday, Amanda Overmyer!

Posted: 27 Oct 2010 01:32 AM PDT

Season 7 finalist Amanda Overmyer celebrates her “Golden Birthday” today – she turns 26 on the 26th. The motorcycle-riding nurse from Indiana made it to the Top 11 of her season. Her smoky voice, rocker roots, and two-toned hair made her stand out from the crowd. Amanda wasn’t afraid to sing rock music by artists and bands such as Janis Joplin, The Doors, and Joan Jett.

In the months following Amanda’s time on American Idol, she worked on her debut album. The CD, Solidify, was released on December 10, 2008 via Chile Records. This hard rock album included 12 tracks.

Lately, Amanda has been touring around the country and performing her music. Last summer, Amanda performed in her hometown of Lafayette, Indiana to an audience of almost 14,000 people. Amanda plays many gigs in her home state, and on Sunday, she performed an acoustic set at the Flora Half Marathon Finish Line Party.

Idols Help Keep Music Education in Schools

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 04:30 AM PDT

The rain didn’t stop 275 industry members and guests from gathering at House of Blues Los Angeles on Tuesday night for a sold-out supercharged evening benefiting Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA). ETM-LA’s Fifth Annual Benefit Gala included electrifying performances by Ben Vereen, Patrice Rushen, and Lalah Hathaway with LA-based funk-band Bern which boasts two of American Idol’s Semifinalists – Rudy Cardenas and Brandon Rogers. The energetic assembly rocked the night with other stars: American Idol’s Music Director (now of the Tonight Show) Rickey Minor as a presenter, Kate Flannery (The Office) as emcee, and Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof (Executive Producers, LOST) who presented Shining Star Awards to ETM-LA’s Honorees, Reggie Andrews and Michael Giacchino.

With the groovin’ Bern Band, Lalah Hathaway’s soulful singing dazzled, Patrice Rushen’s jazz artistry on the keyboards was awe-inspiring, and Ben Vereen’s electrifying performance brought the house down. Perhaps the evening’s most stirring moment occurred as veteran Music Educator Reggie Andrews (and former teacher to Minor, Rushen, Tyrese Gibson) conducted violin and guitar students from ETM-LA and King-Drew Magnet High School in a moving performance of Giacchino’s theme to Disney-Pixar’s UP, garnering a standing ovation.

ETM-LA was thrilled to honor music educator Reggie Andrews and composer Michael Giacchino with Shining Star Awards for their inspiration and excellence in the field of music education. The goal of the event was to help support ETM-LA’s music programs – including such disciplines as strings, guitar, recorder, choral and general music-to <… read more

This Week in Idol History

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 07:27 AM PDT

It’s a big week of anniversaries for Carrie Underwood. The eighteenth marks the day that Idol’s fourth winner released her first post-Idol single, “Jesus, Take The Wheel.” The single was later certified Platinum by the RIAA. October 23 is the three year anniversary of the release of Carrie’s Triple Platinum sophomore album, Carnival Ride, which delivered hit singles like “So Small,” “Last Name,” and “I Told You So.” Two other reasons why Carrie is on the calendar this week: on 10/21/08 she re-released Carnival Ride and included five bonus Christmas tracks, and the next day her replica wax figure was displayed at Madame Tussauds in Time Square.

Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken sang the National Anthem at the opening game of the World Series in NYC on October 18, 2003, shortly after he finished touring the country with the American Idols LIVE! Tour.

Season 5′s Ayla Brown released her debut album, Forward, October 17 of 2006, and Season 5 finalist Ace Young releases his first single, “Scattered,” just three days later.

On October 19, 2009, Daughtry kicked off their “Leave This Town Tour,” which has taken them around the world. The band just returned from the European leg of the tour.
