‘Idol’ hopeful and a Heisman winner: Janell Wheeler and Tim Tebow

Last year, we had an "American Idol" contender dating a ballroom champion (Joanna Pacitti and Mark Ballas — still together, though her "Idol" run was cut short). For Season 9, we could be looking at the pairing of an "Idol" hopeful with one of football's great hopes — Orlando auditioner Janell Wheeler whose reported on-again, off-again boyfriend is Tim Tebow, a 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and star quarterback for the Florida Gators.

Tebow was also recently the center of controversy because of his decision to appear in an anti-abortion ad paid for by conservative Christian group Focus on the Family. In the 30-second spot, which aired during Super Bowl XLIV, he joined his mother, Pam, as she recounted her decision to carry a pregnancy to term, despite exposure to amoebiasis and a doctor's recommendation to terminate. Though the word "abortion" is never used, she calls Tebow her "miracle baby" who "almost didn't make it into this world." The spot drew the ire of abortion rights advocates like Planned Parenthood, who called on CBS to pull it.

Wheeler, meanwhile, seems to be advancing in the Hollywood round. Last week, she impressed the judges with her take on Estelle's "American Boy," and, if you believe the rumored Top 24 lists going around, the 24-year-old Tampa native, who loves to break dance and bargain shop, is positioned to reach the semifinals.

Viewers at home didn't get to see much of her during the group rounds, but did Janell make an impression on you? Check out her Golden Ticket interview below and pipe in…

Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta’s onstage reunion

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 01:56 AM PST

While most of New York City braved the bitter cold on Friday night, some 700 "American Idol" diehards were treated to the show of a lifetime at the Highline Ballroom. That's where three of Season 8's final four — Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta — took the stage for the first (of many, we hope) Ryan Seacrest's Rock My Town concert.

The reports are still trickling in, but this one from MTV News has all the details as well as a pre-show interview with the trio. Apparently, Allison had her share of microphone and key issues, and Adam oozed sex during his 11-song set (so much so that one fan in the front fainted) and Kris, the night's headliner, delivered a loud covers- and mash-up-heavy set, that included Kanye West's "Heartless," Swell Seasons' "Falling Slowly," U2's "With or Without You" and the Beatles' "Come Together."

But it seems no single performance had the impact of the night's grand finale: Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" performed by all three Idols — or, as they're affectionately known, "Kradison." Surely, any Glamberts that left after Adam's set are kicking themselves today.

Fantasia calls out sick for weekend ‘Color Purple’ appearances

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 01:56 AM PST

Getprev-5 In what's hopefully not a repeat of her Broadway "The Color Purple" run, the show's promoters announced that "American
Idol"
winner Fantasia Barrino will not perform in this weekend's
performances at the Pantages Theatre. An understudy will play the role of Celie.

The Culture Monster blog reports that Fantasia missed Friday's performance due to an
inflammation of her vocal cords, and on Saturday her doctor "advised
that for the fastest and most complete recovery she must sit out the
remainder of the weekend." (In the regular schedule, Fantasia does not perform the
Sunday matinees.)

Here's hoping she feels better soon! The L.A. Times review from Friday said Fantasia's turn as Celie was "subtle but riveting."
