BBC Documentaries: Calculating Ada: The Countess of Computing Posted: 17 Sep 2015 02:56 PM PDT Ada Lovelace was a most unlikely computer pioneer. In this film, Dr Hannah Fry tells the story of Ada’s remarkable life. Born in the early 19th century Ada was a countess of the realm, a scandalous socialite and an ‘enchantress of numbers’. The film is an enthralling tale of how a life infused with brilliance, but blighted by illness and gambling addiction, helped give rise to the modern era of computing. Hannah traces Ada’s unlikely union with the father of computers, Charles Babbage. Babbage designed the world’s first steam-powered computers – most famously the analytical engine – but it was Ada who realised the full potential of these new machines. During her own lifetime Ada was most famous for being the daughter of romantic poet Lord Byron (‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’). It was only with the advent of modern computing that Ada’s understanding of their flexibility and power (that they could be far more than mere number crunchers) was recognised as truly visionary. Hannah explores how Ada’s unique inheritance – poetic imagination and rational logic – made her the ideal prophet of the digital age. This moving, intelligent and beautiful film makes you realise we nearly had a Victorian computer revolution. |

Carnival Eats: From Golden State to Gizzards Posted: 17 Sep 2015 01:56 PM PDT The Sacramento County Fair in California’s state capitol is the launching pad for trend-setting fair food including the famous Jalapeno Cheese Skirt Burger. Noah Cappe also investigates two new takes on some classics, and Cowboy Campfire Churros. Next, he meets the locals at Gizzard Fest in Michigan where they’re serving a donut to die for, and an Onion Dog as big as his head. |
Break-in Britain – The Crackdown: Nellie’s Nightmare Posted: 17 Sep 2015 01:26 PM PDT Keeley Donovan comes to the aid of Nellie, a 95-year-old who was burgled while she was away from home having some respite care. The burglars have ransacked her house and taken precious jewellery that was given to her by her late husband. While the police investigate, and Nellie’s daughter Elaine starts the clear-up, Keeley helps to make sure Nellie’s security is up to scratch. Meanwhile, in Swansea, Dan Donnelly is at a student house where a burglar has walked in and taken the television – and a stash of beer. It seems the students were distracted on a student night out and may have left the back door unlocked. But in the stark reality of day, they realise how frightening the prospect of a night prowler really is. Dan Donnelly gives them some security tips, including simple ideas like marking their belongings with UV pens for identification. |
