Top 16 Results and Top 14 Week Posted: 31 Jul 2012 06:04 PM PDT Last night on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, the eight couples performed again with brand-new routines. After America's vote was revealed, Dareian Kujawa, George Lawrence II, Brandon Mitchell, Lindsay Arnold, Eliana Girard and Amber Jackson were the three guys and three girls who received the fewest votes. After deliberating, the judges – Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judge Christina Applegate – saved two guys and two girls – Dareian Kujawa, George Lawrence II, Lindsay Arnold and Eliana Girard – from elimination, and therefore Brandon Mitchell and Amber Jackson were sent home. In addition, the show featured a spectacular performance by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's male stars (Glenn Allen Sims, Kirven James Boyd, Antonio Douthit, Jamar Roberts, Yannick Lebrun and Jermaine Terry) who performed an excerpt of new Artistic Director Robert Battle's dynamic piece "The Hunt." Lythgoe also reminded viewers that the third annual National Dance Day will take place on Saturday, July 28, the same day as The Dizzy Feet Foundation's second annual Celebration of Dance gala at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. For more information, click here. In two weeks, on Wednesday, August 15 at 8/7c, the competition continues on another two hour live show, when the Top 14 finalists: Lindsay Arnold and Cole Horibe; Witney Carson and Chehon Wespi-Tschopp; Audrey Case and Matthew Kazmierczak; Eliana Girard and Cyrus Spencer; Janelle Issis and Dareian Kujawa; Amelia Lowe and Will Thomas; and Tiffany Maher and George Lawrence II – compete once again for America and the judges. Also, the Top 14 will dance some of Mia Michaels' greatest routines, with each couple performing a favorite Michaels-choreographed dance from past seasons. Additionally, choreographers Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt – otherwise known as the Ballet Boyz – will join the panel as guest judges. |

Press Call with Daniel, Nick, and Janaya Posted: 31 Jul 2012 06:04 PM PDT The morning after the first eliminations of Season 9, Daniel Baker, Nick Bloxsom-Carter, and Janaya French hopped on a call with press to talk about their experiences on the show and their plans for the future. Here are some of my takeaways from the call: Will Daniel go back to the ballet? He said he didn't quit the ballet company for the show; he left to explore the commercial dance world. The Australia native hopes to further explore the commercial dancer world before returning to the ballet world. He also revealed that it was his friend – Season 7's Alex Wong – that encouraged him to audition for Season 9. Who was Nick's favorite choreographer he worked with? Nick's favorite choreographers to work with were Leonardo Barrionuevo & Miriam Larici for this week's Argentine Tango. He said it was such a dream and that they were great to work with. As for group choreography, he loved the Christopher Scott routine from last week. He had never heard of Christopher before, and now he discovered his genius. What was it like doing almost an entire dance in a bath tub? Daniel explained that since the tub was such a big part of the number, he and Alexa didn't get to move around the stage as much as usual. He loved working with Dee Caspary and called him "a great inspiration." What do the dancers think of the new show format? Janaya likes that they were together as the Top 20 for longer than any of the other seasons. Nick agreed, saying "We were able to perform so many more times. We were on that stage a lot." He likes that the judges know the results ahead of time so they can pay attention to their partner dances before making cuts, and Nick is glad he didn't find out he was in the bottom until after the night's performances. Daniel would have liked the option to dance for his life, but he liked the fast pace of it. What was the most challenging or surprising part of the SYTYCD experience? Janaya said the mentality you have to have to make sure you come across as strong and confident on the show is very trying. "The last thing you want to do is disappoint America and the judges. I had to try a lot harder than normal to stay positive." Nick agreed saying, "You have to be mentally strong to do this show. If you have any shred of doubt it shows. There is no room for error on the show." Daniel felt that time restrictions was his biggest challenge. He explained how the dancers only have hours to master choreography, and doing a live show added to the stress and pressure of the show. What are the dancers' future plans? Janaya plans to keep doing what she was doing before – auditioning in LA – but now with the experience under her belt of working with some of the industry's greatest professionals. "This experience lit a fire under me," she said. Janaya doesn't mind that her SYTYCD journey is over, because now she can continue to explore the other genres she was introduced to on the show and take those kinds of classes. Since Nick worked with Jason Gilkison so much on SYTYCD, he's hoping to work with him on Burn The Floor. In the long term, Nick dreams of being a professional dancer on Dancing With The Stars. Daniel will continue to explore the commercial dance world and hopes for an agent and audition opportunities. He is also choreographing a bit and has a few other gigs lined up. National Dance Day Choreographer Postage Stamps Posted: 31 Jul 2012 06:04 PM PDT As Nigel Lythgoe mentioned on last night's show, the United States Postal Service will pay tribute to four influential choreographers – Isadora Duncan, José Limón, Katherine Dunham, and Bob Fosse – with Innovative Choreographers stamps. The postage stamps will be available starting on National Dance Day, July 28, 2012. From the USPS.com: - The stamp design for Isadora Duncan shows her seemingly effortless style that paved the way for modern dance. Radical for its time, her linking of movement and expressiveness garnered her worldwide critical aclaim. - Shown in a performance pose in the stamp, José Limón frequently drew inspiration from history, literature, and religion, and used natural movement and gesture in his choreography. His virile, powerful works elevated the importance of the male dancer in modern dance. - Founder of one of the first African-American dance companies in the United States, Katherine Dunham was the first choreographer to develop a formal dance technique that combined Caribbean and African dance elements with aspects of ballet. She is shown in a pose from her critically acclaimed ballet L’Ag’Ya. - Bob Fosse, celebrated for directing and choreographing musicals on both stage and screen, is shown on the set of Sweet Charity (1969). Fosse received one Oscar, three Emmys, and nine Tony awards during his career. Yet perhaps his greatest contribution was in making dance accessible to millions. Designed to look like posters advertising a performance, the stamp art captures the luminosity and mystery of a live dance performance. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps using illustrations in watercolor on vintage paper by artist James McMullan. The Innovative Choreographers stamps are being issued as Forever stamps in self-adhesive sheets of 20 (5 of each design). Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate. |
