American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez wowed viewers at Sunday’s American Music Awards. The singer took home the AMA for Latin Music: Favorite Artist, edging out tough competitors Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias (who won this award the previous five years). When she took the stage to receive the award, an emotional Jennifer stated, “It’s been an amazing year…up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things.”

Jennifer Lopez joined will.i.am on the stage and they literally glowed as they debuted their new song “T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)” which also features Mick Jagger. She also performed a medley of hits off her album including “Papi” and “On The Floor” during which Pitbull joined her.

In a sparkly red dress, American Idol’s first winner, Kelly Clarkson, performed her latest single “Mr. Know It All” backed by a swingin’ big band.

The day before the release of their third studio album, Daughtry took the stage to perform “Crawling Back To You.” Season 5′s Chris Daughtry looked handsome in a suit as he led the band.

Daughtry’s "Break The Spell" is Here

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 11:24 PM PST

The American Idol alumni are sure keeping us busy today! Rock group Daughtry, led by none other than Season 5 superstar Chris Daughtry, released their third studio album, Break The Spell, today. The album is a gleaming showcase for frontman Chris Daughtry’s powerful, emotionally resonant voice and knack for relentless melodic hooks and big, anthemic choruses. Produced by Howard Benson, who produced Daughtry’s two previous albums, Break The Spell gives the band room to evolve musically while aiming to satisfy its many long-time fans.

“Going in to the writing sessions, we said, ‘Let’s not try to sound like anything. Let’s just write, and see what happens,’” says Chris, who co-wrote every song with either one of his band-mates (guitarists Josh Steely and Brian Craddock and bassist Josh Paul) or collaborators such as Marti Frederiksen, busbee, and Bret James. “We came up with some pretty interesting tunes that sound nothing like anything we’ve done before. Even though some of them didn’t make the album, the process stretched us and took us to new places. It was an absolutely inspirational experience.”

The track list for Break The Spell is:
1. Renegade
2. Crawling Back To You
3. Outta My Head
4. Start Of Something Good
5. Crazy
6. Break The Spell
7. We’re Not Gonna Fall
8. Gone Too Soon
9. Losing My Mind
10. Rescue Me
11. Louder Than Ever
12. Spaceship

Fun fact: today also marks the five year anniversary of the release of Daughtry’s 4x-platinum debut album! Daughtry has back-to-back No. 1 albums, four No. 1 Top 40 hits (“… read more

Justin Bieber And Boyz II Men Unwrap ‘Fa La La’ Video

Black-and-white video showcases Bieber’s heartfelt singing with his idols.

Christmas is right around the corner, but the Biebs is already in the holiday spirit. On Wednesday (November 23), Justin Bieber dropped the video for “Fa La La” with Boyz II Men. There are no reindeer or presents under the tree; instead, Justin and the Philadelphia R&B outfit sing of a warm love that will endure through the holiday season.

The black-and-white clip begins in an empty loft, where Bieber sings alone, with his arms flailing and face slightly scrunching every time he hits those heartfelt notes. Justin’s solo intro leads way to a collaborative bridge, where Boyz II Men join in. “Baby you de-serve eve-ry-thing you want/ It’s your night,” they all sing in harmony as the “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye” vocalists join the teenage star in song on the front porch of a brick house.

No elaborate set needed. With an empty city as their backdrop, the four crooners throw down in an old-fashioned sing-off. As the track builds, BIIM’s Wanya Morris really gets into it, pounding his chest and kicking one leg up to accentuate his performance. Bieber, who is dressed in a white tee and slim-cut leather jacket, tugs on his collar to let you just how much his words mean to him.

On November 1, Bieber teased the clip when he tweeted, “Killed it with @BoyzIImen on DWTS and then just shot a video for our song #FALALA with @colintilley – great night! living a dream. Thanku,” in reference to his appearance on “Dancing With The Stars” and the Colin Tilley-directed “Fa La La” video.

Maybe some of Boyz II Men’s subject matter was a bit mature for the pint-size Bieber, but they influenced him nonetheless. “He told us his mom didn’t want him to sing ‘I’ll Make Love to You,’ so he’d sneak and go sing it somewhere,” Wanya Morris told MTV News. “It’s also good to know we’ve influenced such a good artist. It’s something that makes us feel we’ve accomplished [something and] we’re doing our job, [that] a guy so young and so into his craft [is] influenced by three guys from Philadelphia that love to sing.”

Yes, “Fa La La” is the latest single from JB’s holiday LP, Under the Mistletoe, but Tilley and company didn’t overload the video with Christmas themes as to so implicitly tie it to December 25 — after all, true love should last all year ’round.

What do you think of the video? Let us know in the comments!

Rihanna’s Talk That Talk: The Reviews Are In!

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 10:27 PM PST

Critics call RiRi’s sixth album ‘often great’ and ‘relentlessly catchy.’
By John Mitchell

Rihanna‘s much-anticipated Talk That Talk hit stores Monday on a wave of near-universal praise from critics. The album, which can already claim the #1 song in the country, “We Found Love” featuring Calvin Harris, is earning the Barbadian pop superstar the best reviews of her commercially massive career.

MTV News’ James Montgomery already declared Talk That Talk “not only the best effort of her career, but arguably the best pop album of 2011,” an assessment echoed by the New York Times, People, Rolling Stone and SPIN.

“The best songs on this lively and often great album sound synth-perfect for that time [the early 1990s]. ‘We Found Love’ almost criminally recalls the swinging Crystal Waters singles, with triumphant percussion somewhere between church and seventh-inning stretch,” the Times writes. ” ‘Where Have You Been’ is even better, with hard, chilly synths, snares from the poppier side of house music, and Rihanna moving in and out of a curled Siouxsie Sioux tone.”

In a three-and-a-half -star review (out of four), People calls Talk That Talk “one of 2011′s best pop-diva statements,” while Spin awards the set an 8 out of 10, complimenting the “occasionally perfect pop” songs on the record and noting the set is easily Rihanna’s most cohesive to date.

Rolling Stone also notes that Talk is far more than a collection of singles. “Rihanna’s sixth album is her tightest, most assured yet — a relentlessly catchy and danceable pop album, with first-rate contributions from top songwriter-producers,” the magazine writes.

Many critics also seem pleased that the pop star is moving away from the darker, brooding material that marked her last two records, Rated R and Loud. Those albums appeared to be heavily influenced by her troubled relationship with Chris Brown, and, as noted in Entertainment Weekly‘s B-plus review, often “equated falling for someone with feeling tortured.”

On Talk, RiRi instead approaches the topics of love and sex — the album’s principal themes — with a less-heavy hand, even admitting on “Roc Me Out”: “I’ll let you in on a dirty secret/ I just want to be loved.”

While the album is mostly earning raves, Pitchfork had a few complaints — mostly that the brief set (the 11-track album clocks in at a mere 38 minutes) never fully realizes its potential.

In its summation of the album, Billboard calls Talk “a fleshed-out statement that captures Rihanna’s relentless drive and will likely keep her on top. This album’s not a victory lap; it’s a whole new race.”

Whether the mostly stellar reviews will translate into strong sales for Rihanna, who set a Billboard chart record by racking up 20 Top-10 singles faster than any solo artist, with “We Found Love,” remains to be seen.

Britney Spears Video Tournament Down To Sweet 16!

After a surprisingly tight race among the 30 Britney Spears music videos in the first round of MTV News’ Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years, we are now down to 16 candidates for her best video of all time!

Perez Hilton and Jordan Miller of Britney fansite BreatheHeavy.com helped the MTV News correspondents weigh in on the first round, which saw the surprising and merciless elimination of the classic “Sometimes” and the newer hit “I Wanna Go.”

“I think that ‘I Wanna Go’ is one of Britney’s all-time best videos,” Perez said of the clip, which was defeated by her even newer video for “Criminal,” co-starring real-life boyfriend Jason Trawick. “I like the ‘Criminal’ video; I don’t love it.”

Meanwhile, some videos were huge leaders early on, like “Toxic,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Me Against the Music” and early “TRL”-era hit “(You Drive Me) Crazy.”

Head over to Britney30.MTV.com and vote for your favorite music video in MTV News’ Britney Spears Tournament: 30 Videos for 30 Years.

The race between “Lucky” and “Boys” was a closer call than MTV News expected, with only a 7 percent margin between the two videos; “Lucky” was the eventual winner. Another interesting twist was the dark “My Prerogative” clip’s triumph over the happy-go-lucky vibe of “Sometimes.”

With 16 videos left, the race gets much tighter. Now, Britney’s most epic and most-celebrated videos will be up against each other. “(You Drive Me) Crazy” will take on the double-pop queen-powered “Me Against the Music,” featuring Madonna, while Britney’s first video, ” … Baby One More Time,” takes on her most recent clip, “Criminal.”

“Till the World Ends” and “Piece of Me,” which had byes in the first round, are no longer safe, as they are pitted against “My Prerogative” and “Hold It Against Me,” respectively, in round two, which closes at 11:59 p.m. Sunday. The Elite Eight will be announced at 7 a.m. Monday. Help your favorite videos win by voting as many times as you can and campaigning.

AWOLNATION Call Debut Album ‘Genre-Less’

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 10:27 PM PST

‘I feel lucky to be a songwriter that has an open mind to all different kinds of music,’ frontman Aaron Bruno says of Megalithic Symphony.

AWOLNATION’s Aaron Bruno

AWOLNATION may be a play on frontman Aaron Bruno’s childhood nickname, but according to him, it’s far from a solo project.

“It’s my vision, I suppose, but it’s sort of uncomfortable for me to take full responsibility for it, because nothing is possible without the support of a team of people,” said Bruno, formerly of such rock acts as Under the Influence of Giants and Hometown Hero.

Still, he remains instrumental in crafting the style-bending and -defying melodies, hooks and choruses featured throughout the group’s debut album, Megalithic Symphony (listen to his singles, “Not Your Fault” and “Sail,” for perfect takes on pop-punk and prog industrial, respectively).

“I feel lucky to be a songwriter that has an open mind to all different kinds of music,” Bruno said. “So I think because of that, I was able to make a record that is genre-less, and I’m very proud to not be able to tell you that it’s an alternative record or only a rock record, et cetera. … I’m just a huge music nerd/fan at the end of the day.”

But how did they come up with that name? “I went with the name AWOL, because I’ve always enjoyed the option of leaving social circumstances without having to explain myself,” Bruno said. Less straightforward, however, is Bruno’s songwriting. “It’s important to me that people interpret the lyrics and the concept and the message for their own and not read too much into it literally. Because a lot of the lyrics are metaphors for life situations that I’ve been in, and I encourage people to create their own meaning for it out of it all.”

Regardless of how the songs are taken in, Bruno is sincere in hoping whatever message is delivered holds meaning to the listener. His one great hope for Megalithic Symphony? “Hopefully this record that I’ve made helps people through the struggles of life or helps them through the good times.”
