Idols Help Keep Music Education in Schools Posted: 23 Oct 2010 04:30 AM PDT The rain didn’t stop 275 industry members and guests from gathering at House of Blues Los Angeles on Tuesday night for a sold-out supercharged evening benefiting Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA). ETM-LA’s Fifth Annual Benefit Gala included electrifying performances by Ben Vereen, Patrice Rushen, and Lalah Hathaway with LA-based funk-band Bern which boasts two of American Idol’s Semifinalists – Rudy Cardenas and Brandon Rogers. The energetic assembly rocked the night with other stars: American Idol’s Music Director (now of the Tonight Show) Rickey Minor as a presenter, Kate Flannery (The Office) as emcee, and Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof (Executive Producers, LOST) who presented Shining Star Awards to ETM-LA’s Honorees, Reggie Andrews and Michael Giacchino. With the groovin’ Bern Band, Lalah Hathaway’s soulful singing dazzled, Patrice Rushen’s jazz artistry on the keyboards was awe-inspiring, and Ben Vereen’s electrifying performance brought the house down. Perhaps the evening’s most stirring moment occurred as veteran Music Educator Reggie Andrews (and former teacher to Minor, Rushen, Tyrese Gibson) conducted violin and guitar students from ETM-LA and King-Drew Magnet High School in a moving performance of Giacchino’s theme to Disney-Pixar’s UP, garnering a standing ovation. ETM-LA was thrilled to honor music educator Reggie Andrews and composer Michael Giacchino with Shining Star Awards for their inspiration and excellence in the field of music education.
