Siobhan Magnus explains the ill-fated ‘Teen Idols’ week, takes issue with ’scream’ label, more at ‘Dream’ house

As fun as it was to have dinner with Siobhan Magnus and the "If I Can Dream" crew (including her Top 24 bud Alex Lambert), the experience was also bittersweet because it felt like a goodbye. Sure, she had been eliminated on "American Idol" two days prior, but knowing a hang was scheduled for Friday night, it was easy to put off the inevitable. But there was no avoiding it once this dinner and Twitter Q&A session were over.

Nevertheless, we tried to make the most of our time with Siobhan, who was adorably charming in every way — but we already knew that from watching her on the show. So what did we learn about Massachusetts' first Top 10 contender and the crazy three months she'd just experienced? Plenty.

Starting with the song she was planning on performing for next week's Frank Sinatra theme: the Sid Vicious version of "My Way." How much would that have rocked? Or not.

Siobhan also revealed what happened with the ill-fated "teen Idols" episode. It turned out the list of optional songs were so poor, she said, that too many Idols were picking too similar songs by the same artists. "There was too many duplications of everything," Siobhan explained. "Two
people wanted Jackson 5, two wanted Michael Jackson, two wanted to do the
Monkees,"  and executive producer Ken Warwick "got really mad. He was, like, 'Never have I had so many
people want the same thing!' So after we'd been rehearsing all day, everything got halted, and we had to wait for a few hours while they made a new
list of songs. It had never been done before, but
the theme was changed to Billboard No. 1 hits." As for what Siobhan had picked out? Surprisingly, it wasn't her favorite band, Hanson, but rather Lulu's 1967 classic "To Sir With Love."

You'd expect a certain degree of woulda-coulda-shoulda from Siobhan, an early favorite who wore her eccentricity proudly, but her perspective is one of no regrets. Would she take back her snappy retorts to the judges? Not likely. "I have talked back a lot," she reflected. "Some people [thought I was] being a brat,
but I wasn't. Given the opportunity to stand up
for yourself or explain yourself, why not do it? When Simon says, 'Why on
earth would you pick that song?' Tell them why you picked the song!" As for the oft-criticized scream? "I prefer 'wail,' " she said.

IMG00863 Indeed, there was nothing vaguely screechy, squeal- or scream-like about her duet with Alex Lambert on Beyonce's "Halo." Ditto for her solo turn at the piano singing Hanson's "Use Me Up" and "I Will Come to You." And who knew she could even play piano?! Though Siobhan did reveal that this week, everybody's favorite security blanket, the guitar, was not allowed (per Warwick). No, he's not discriminating against wooden stringed instruments, it's the Harry Connick Jr. big band thing, apparently.

That might prove difficult for Casey James, who swore he'd never play without one. Then again, a little touch of diva would fall in line with his "princess" reputation. Siobhan explained: "Every day, we'd crack jokes about him
being a princess. So when he was late for
pickup, I'd say something like, 'Oh, did you forget your tiara?' He started
to bring this suitcase with him everywhere he went that had a pillow
and a blankie in it. … He's got this 'murse,' as Crystal would call it. And I told Crystal, as the only girl, it's her the responsibility to make fun
of Casey every day. It's hard work and it has to be
done."

And if you've ever wondered how a 20-year-old from Cape Cod can seem so TV savvy, Siobhan has an explanation for that as well — a little-known Web show called "High Drama: Against All Oz," which was filmed at her alma mater, Barnstable High School. "The WB was doing a search for a high school drama club so they could
come document the process of putting on a play and somehow they picked us," she elaborated. "So they came and spent two months with us while
we put together 'The Wizard of Oz.' It was good
preparation for doing 'Idol' — always having cameras
around, being careful about what you say, doing interviews and stuff. … It was cool."

IMG00860 It was also around the filming of the show that Siobhan cut her hair short. It had been down to her "bum,"  but a friend inspired her to donate her footlong pony tail. "My friend Ralph was diagnosed with cancer
halfway through our senior year," she explained. "He had beautiful long curly blond hair
and he lost all of it within a few months, so he shaved his head." Fortunately, Siobahn's pal is fine now, and has been in the "Idol" studio audience to cheer her on. But her hair's not necessarily safe. "I love cutting my own hair," she says. "I get really
excited and sometimes carried away. I gave myself a mohawk with my dad's
beard trimmer."

Speaking of Siobhan's dad, Alan, he was interviewed the day after her elimination looking forlorn, but also was excited to have his little girl back within reach. So how does Siobhan feel about her impending homecoming? "I'm a little nervous," she confessed. "I just don't want a bunch of people to be, like, 'Oh what happened?' Maybe I'll go into hiding for a while."

Before she does, read on for highlights from Siobhan's "If I Can Dream" Twitter Q&A, during which she discussed her fashion influences, her favorite "Idol" judge and what she had in common with Adam Lambert!

What's your favorite color?

My favorite color is rainbow with sparkles. I like all colors, I like ocean colors, blue, green, purple… I don't have one favorite color.

I understand your name means 'God is gracious.' Does that have personal significance for you?

My name is the Gaelic form of Joan, which is the female form of John, which means God is gracious. Personally, I think that's wicked cool. My mom wanted to name me Elora Danan after the baby of the prophecy of the movie "Willow," and my dad said no.

IMG00859 What was it like living with Didi?

It was awesome living with Didi because she's such a big personality and she's really cool so we had a lot of great conversations.

Are you going to make some new songs with Lunar Valve?

I am going to make some new songs with Lunar Valve, that's my band and they're awesome. So yes!

Do you have an all-time favorite artist? Both musical and fine arts?

Musically, my favorite artists are Hanson and Hole. Fine arts? I love all kinds of artists, I don't know who's my favorite. It's a big question.

Do you like anime?

I'm not a huge anime fan, but I do like some. I enjoy "Cowboy Bebop," for instance, and I like comic books and graphic novels. I'm starting to get into the "Walking Dead" series right now, it's really good.

Siobhan, your fans love you so much. Did you know the "AI" forum fans donated nearly $6,000 to Idol Gives Back in your name?

I didn't know that. The last I had heard it was $2,000 but that's incredible and just being a part of "Idol Gives Back" was so amazing and I feel honored to be able to give back, so thank you.

What do you think about Alex being on "If I Can Dream" after "Idol"?

I think they're crazy for putting Alex in this house because other people have to live here, too! Only kidding! I'm very proud of him and I love him for some crazy reason.

Did you know we named a rescue cat after you? Tell us about your pet cat Ophelia! (Wee Paws Las Vegas)…

I got your letter about the cat you named after me and I nearly cried. Thank you so much, that's the most incredible thing. My cat Ophelia I rescued from a shelter in Providence, Rhode Island and she was one of many, many pets who had been surrendered in that city. All the cages had tags that said, "Reason for surrender: not enough room in the house," or "new baby…" It was so sad, but she's precious, I think she's a manx. She has no tail and is like a big hamster. She's so awesome.

Are you a fan of Adam Lambert? Because I heard you have an Eye of Horus tattoo on the back of your neck.

I do have an Eye of Horus tattoo on the back of my neck. I didn't know that Adam had one when I got mine. I wasn't trying to copy him. I just really like the symbol. It's a symbol of protection and I'm really into Egyptian mythology. But I am a  fan of Adam and he's awesome.

Did you get a lot of fan mail? Did you enjoy reading it? What was your favorite?

I did get some fan mail, which is wicked cool. I liked this one letter I got from two little girls. It was, like, "Dear Siobhan: we really like you on the show you sing really well. Could you tell Tim Urban I said 'hi'?" [Laughs] But I think the best fan mail was letters from younger girls who are like 13 or 14 who said that I helped them be more comfortable being themselves and being different. That was really cool because it was something I always wanted to do."

What were your favorite spots in Salem?

All the creepy graveyards and stuff, because I'm a creep. Like downtown, where there's like brick roads and cobblestone and everything.

Who is your biggest fashion influence?

My cousin Connell, he's 3 years old and my fashion icon. Him and my boss' son Zane, who's 4. I like to call it "Lost Boy chic," because Connell and his sisters are really into playing Peter Pan, and whenever I babysit them, we have to dress up and always end up with leaves and sticks all in their hair. Also my mom, who told me leather and lace was always the best fashion combination. And Courtney Love, Joey Ramone, Karen O, a few others…

Is the 'Tron' nickname from the video game; is that an interest of yours?

My nickname Tron has actually nothing to do with the video game or the movie. It's actually my boss' son Zane. … He's my best friend, and when he was learning to talk, he couldn't' say Siobhan, it'd just come out like Tron, and it just stuck.

IMG00861 You and Lee were close on "Idol." What is your honest opinion of him? And don't just say "he's nice."

I wouldn't just say that. I've said a lot before. Lee is an amazing person. He's probably one of the best friends I've ever had, he's the coolest guy, he's so talented and down-to-earth and makes me laugh until I cry. Lee's awesome.

What do you think of Lady Gaga? Your Halloween mask dress idea reminded me of her Kermit the frog dress.

I think Lady Gaga's wicked cool . I love how artistic she is, I appreciate her daring to be so different. And now I'm really set on my Halloween mask dress [for the tour]. Scary masks of monsters sewn together.

How dominating did you feel the first time you hit that big note on "Idol"?

I didn't feel dominating, I just felt good that I got a good reaction and that I hit that note, because hitting those notes is like the best feeling, really. It's like a musical high, letting out all my feelings by wailing, not screaming.

What was your favorite song to do on "Idol"?

I liked every song that I did for its own reasons. "Paint It Black" was wicked fun because it was so dramatic and that was a good technique that I was being theatrical, because then later on, I guess it became a bad thing…

Who did you pull for in Season 8? Have you ever met contestant Matt Giraud?

We met. … He was very kind. They were all really cool. I liked Adam probably the best. We have a lot in common and he's a sweetheart.

Why didn't you ever play piano on "Idol"? That would have been amazing! And how did you attach the butterflies?

I was a bit intimidated to play piano on the show because it would've been two things I had to concentrate on instead of just singing. And I attached the butterflies with magic. I'm gonna let that remain a mystery because it's better that way. TV magic — smoke and mirrors.

Did you have a favorite judge on "Idol"? Who was your favorite mentor?

I think Randy is my favorite judge because he's wicked cool and down-to-earth but also he would defend me and compliment my wardrobe. … He gets it, he's awesome. I loved all the mentors, but Adam was probably the most helpful just because he was on "Idol" before so he knew what we were going through. Alicia [Keys] was amazing. She's so down-to-earth and made you feel like you didn't have to be afraid of her because she's famous. She made you feel like you were just kind of hanging out.

Have you written any of your own music and what genre do you write in?

I have written my own music and the genre I write in I would say is crappy-boy-inspired angst. Because it's so much harder for me to write happy songs, I wrote a lot of angry … songs.

Can you do the "Single Ladies" dance with Katie and Crystal on the finale?

Katie's so good at it, she would show me up, so probably not.

Who was the one person you were most sorry to see get eliminated from "Idol"?

Alex. Did you see me bawling my eyes out that night. That was the hardest I ever cried when somebody left. And then they're like, "OK, photos!" You have no idea how many copies of that Top 12 8×10 photo I've had to autograph where my face and nose is red.

Would you like to be on "Glee"?

I don't think that's my cup of tea. I'd love to do some live theater. I want to be in "Phantom of the Opera."

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, living or dead, whom would you choose?

Maybe Homer or Plato? Or David Lynch, the writer and director of some of my favorite movies. I'd love to have dinner with him.

How stoked were you about the Ford commercial last week? You were the best vampire!

I loved that commercial. It was kind of hard. The contact lenses were very uncomfortable, and I've never worn contacts before, but apparently my left eye is too fat and it wouldn't stay in place. And they were the cat-eye ones, so I would blink and then I'd open my eyes and they'd have turned sideways. I had to keep adjusting them, but I had these really long fake press-on nails. Also because of those press-on nails, I couldn't do anything on my own all day. Like I had to have the stylist pull down my tights and underwear for me to go pee. I was, like, "I feel so helpless!" We all had fun with the vampire stuff. Well Lee was a little bit grumpy because it took like 20 [minutes] to get his contacts in.

Siobhan, what advice would you have for someone wanting to audition for "American Idol"?

At your first audition, keep your eyes open. Because I didn't, and they stopped me and said, "That was pretty good, but do you have something you can sing with your eyes open, please? This is television, you can't just have your eyes closed."
