Justin Guarini Brings Music to the Classroom Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:06 PM PDT This wasnt a typical Friday at the St. Sebastian School situated near the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. On March 26th, the K-8th graders were treated to a rare celebrity visit by American Idol Season One Runner-Up Justin Guarini. As part of Music in Our Schools Month, Justin gave back by visiting his littlest fans music students at the St. Sebastian School. The students got to hear all about Justins experience growing up, learning music, and their favorite topic what it was like to be on American Idol and sing for Simon Cowell and the other judges. One child asked, Is Simon as mean in real life as he is on TV? Justin recalled an incident when Simon moved faster than lightning to save a cockroach backstage, showing a side of Simon that people dont always see on Idol. The atmosphere was electric Justin sang his own song Missing You, and a Hank Williams, Sr. classic, Im so Lonesome I Could Cry, which included an indelible improvisational whistling section. When asked what inspires him to make music, Justin answered Life. What happens every day can be an inspiration for my music, what I experience, what I feel in my heart. Other questions delved more into his personal life. One question got huge giggles from the audience – Whos your girl? Justin happily talked about his wife, who was his former long-time girlfriend. Read about Justins recent marriage. This visit is a continuation of my initiative to help save music … read more |
Happy Birthday, Michael Sarver! Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:06 PM PDT Season 8s 10th place finalist, Michael Sarver, celebrated his 29th birthday yesterday. It was one year ago last week that the oil rigger was eliminated from the competition after his performance of Aint Too Proud To Beg during Motown Week. After spending the summer on tour with the 2009 Top 10, Michael went back to his hometown of Jasper, Texas to spend time with his wife and kids, and to make music. Currently, Michael is working on his debut country album to be released this year with Dream Records/Universal. Read about his record deal. Michael has released two songs, You Are and Cinderella Girl. He sang some of his new music while touring with fellow Season 8 alum Alexis Grace, Season 7s David Hernandez, and Season 6s Gina Glocksen on the American Stars in Concert tour. This Thursday, April 1st, Michael will be performing at Legacy Christian High School in Beaumont, Texas. Happy Birthday, Michael! Michaels loyal fans have been chatting up a storm in the MyIdol forums. Check it out and join in the conversation! |
Today in ‘Idol’: Usher mentors Soul and R&B week, Daughtry on ‘Regis & Kelly’ Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:06 PM PDT
Ushering in the Top 10: With guidance from guest mentor Usher, who'll perform on Wednesday's results episode along with Diddy and Justin Bieber, the Top 10 take the stage for Soul and R&B night, the first true theme of season 9 (yes, we're still perplexed over last week's eleventh-hour switch). Will the "Idol" hopefuls lean heavy on longtime go-tos like Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, or will they take a chance and surprise us with something new or adventurous? The genre is comfortable terrain for the likes of Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox and even Andrew Garcia, but Tim Urban and Katie Stevens could find themselves in trouble. Tune in to see all the triumphs and trainwrecks. (Fox, 8 p.m.) 'Live' Daughtry: It's all "Idol" all the time over at "Live with Regis and Kelly." On Monday. "American Idol" judge (and distant cousin of Regis') Kara DioGuardi guest-hosted, taking the opportunity to plug her upcoming solo shows at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City, N.J., and the next day, Daughtry takes the stage, singing a track off their latest album, "Leave This Town" (check local listings). Dancing with the "Idol" Stars: Just up the coast in San Luis Obispo, Season 2's Trenyce and season 7's David Hernandez will provide the "vocal accompaniment and interludes" to "Ballroom With a Twist," a dance performance "extravaganza" directed by "Dancing with the Stars'" Louis Van Amstel, hosted by "I Dream of Jeannie's" Barbara Eden and featuring Ashleigh and Ryan Di Lello of "So You Think You Can Dance" fame. Guess the title "So You Think You Can Dance With the American Idol Stars" was deemed too wordy? Post-’Idol’ arrest record grows longer by the day Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:06 PM PDT Hot on the heels of Monday's news that Season 7 finalist Chikezie is being charged with attempted grand theft for allegedly trying to purchase two bottles of cologne (at a hefty price tag: just under $1,300!) with a fraudulent credit card at a Beverly Hills Neiman Marcus back in February, comes word of another "Idol" alum's run-in with the law. Stephanie Edwards, who finished in 11th place on Season 6, was arrested in Savannah, Ga., Monday night for a "girl-on-girl" brawl, according to TMZ. Citing the Chatham County Sheriff's Department, the site says Edwards and another woman were arrested at around 10 p.m. for "fighting in the middle of the street." Edwards allegedly told police she had Of course, they're not the first former finalists to get handcuffed and booked. Season 4 finalist Jessica Sierra was busted in 2007 for drug possession and assault, prompting her to enroll in Dr. Drew's "Celebrity Rehab." And even pre-"Idol," many contestants have admitted to having a record. Earlier this month, Season 9's Casey James told Idol Tracker his arrest back in 2001 was a prime example of him being "young and stupid." Still, for a family-friendly show, "Idol" has a surprisingly long rap sheet. What do you make of it? – Shirley Halperin Follow @IdolTracker on Twitter |
Paige Miles looks back on her time in ‘La-La Land’ Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:05 PM PDT In the second of Idol Tracker's weekly series, Top 11 contestant Paige Miles reflects on her time in "La-La Land," and offers her thoughts on the "American Idol" judges (Randy Jackson wears cool shoes! Simon Cowell is shorter than you think!), Ryan Seacrest's Twitter addiction and the Hollywood landmark she never got to visit (Staples Center — go Lakers!). VIDEO: Idol Confessions with Kevin Covais Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:05 PM PDT Season 5 finalist Kevin Covais recently stopped by the L.A. Times studio. The Long Island, N.Y., native filled us in on his favorite memories from the show, an entire episode he'd like to forget and his life since "Idol," starring… Lindsay Lohan? That's right! Paige Miles wows ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:05 PM PDT Paige Miles had her moment on "Late Show With David Letterman" last night, and she reminded anyone who'd forgotten why Simon Cowell once said of her, "Out of all of the girls, you have the best voice." Miles rocked Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City," and she clearly made a fan of "Letterman" bandleader Paul Shaffer, who said he couldn't imagine why she'd been voted off of "American Idol." "We had a great time rehearsing with her today," Shaffer told Letterman. "She's terrific." Miles also engaged in the requisite pre-song chitchat with Letterman, who got in his typical "Idol" slams. "You'd always wanted to be on 'American Idol'? How did that begin?" he asked. "Yeah, I mean, I watched the first season. I was 16 when it started," Miles replied. "So I'd actually never thought about doing it, but …" "That's interesting, I watched the first season and I said to myself, 'I never want to be on that show,'" Letterman said. "Just two different types of people. Two different outlooks." Letterman later asked, "Were the people nice? I hear that they're not nice. I hear they're evil." After Miles countered that the "Idol" people were "supernice," Letterman asked her which judge was her favorite. "They were all special in their own ways, but I really loved Ellen," she said. "She brought a really nice dynamic to the panel. She made us feel really comfortable. She smiled a lot at us so that we weren't always terrified to sing up there." Monday morning wrap: ‘Idol’ meets ‘Jersey Shore’ Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:05 PM PDT Welcome to Monday. Here's what's going on in "Idol"-land: How much would you pay for "American Idol"? The company that owns both "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," CKX Inc., is close to being sold to a private-equity branch of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., One Equity Partners, according to the Wall Street Journal. Under the current deal, CKX's stock has been valued at $6 per share, whereas in 2007, another deal was on the table that valued the company at $13.75 a share. Part of the reduced value can be explained by the departure of "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller from CKX earlier this year — and also the high cost of retaining the show's key talent. According to the Wall Street Journal, CKX recently had to shell out $15 million to keep host Ryan Seacrest on board and for the rights to promote his image and name. Step up and place your bets: Oddsmakers are placing Crystal Bowersox as the favorite to win the "Idol" season at this point, with Siobhan Magnus right behind her. Least likely to carry the contest? Knee-sliding heartthrob Tim Urban, according to online sportsbooks, though USA Today's "Idol Chatter" blog conjures a "doomsday scenario" in which various factors align that result in a big Urban win. Urban aside, a Bowersox/Magnus showdown might be something to see. Both women are not just talented, but tough, too. Bowersox's hometown paper in Ohio, the Sandusky Register, reveals that the dreadlocked singer was performing in bars right up until she went into labor with her son. "She was onstage ready to perform at the Bharmacy when the contractions started coming," notes the paper. "About a month later she was back — writing her own songs and selling CDs after her shows." And Magnus's fourth-grade teacher, Marge Dolby, has told the Cape Cod Times in Massachusetts that the young singer stunned her with her pipes way back in elementary school, when she belted out "Tomorrow" from the musical "Annie." "It was such a moment," Dolby tells the paper. "Everyone just got quiet, because we didn't know. And then we knew. We knew what she had. It was a natural gift." Guess who's coming to "Idol": Rumor has it that Justin Bieber (of whom Katy Perry teasingly tweeted, "I would tap that. Yummy") will appear on "American Idol" this week, and that Adam Lambert (who tells MTV UK that he has a crush on soccer star David Beckham and "wouldn't kick him out of bed") is set to take the "Idol" stage later this season. Also, "Pants on the Ground" phenom General Larry Platt is said to be lined up for this season's finale. Diana and Ace's unlikely new friends: "Idol" alums Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young shared the stage with Snooki and The Situation from the MTV reality show "Jersey Shore" as well as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Saturday in a "Hair" parody performed to raise money for charity. Alex Lambert fan campaign shifts gears, sets sights on ‘If I Can Dream’ Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:05 PM PDT Don't think those Alex Lambert fans have given up on getting their favorite "American Idol" reject a second chance. Though he was eliminated from the Top 24 almost three weeks ago, the Texas native has since amassed a sizable following — some 19,000 people have already signed a petition essentially demanding a recount of the March 11 results show, in which Lambert, Lilly Scott, Todrick Hall and Katelyn Epperly were sent home. And now Lambert fans are setting their sights on Simon Fuller's newly launched Web show, "If I Can Dream," in which five aspiring stars living together in the Hollywood Hills try to catch their first big break. The Facebook pages were a flutter with activity Sunday night as fans encouraged others to petition "Dream" producers to consider Lambert as the sixth cast member. "We have an opportunity to put Alex on the show 'If I Can Dream' to help him get a label," read one post. "And that means 24/7 Alex Lambert!" (Having spent some time in the "Dream" mansion, I can attest that there is an extra, empty bedroom prepped for that very purpose.) Will his Hollywood dreams come true after all? Lambert tweeted that he was in L.A. on Friday, that's certainly a good start. Check back for updates as we get them. – Shirley Halperin Follow @IdolTracker on Twitter Photo: Alex Lambert performs on the March 2 show. Credit: Michael Becker / PictureGroup |
