Today in ‘Idol’: Top 24 partial reveal; Adam Lambert at New York Fashion Week Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:56 AM PST And the moment is finally upon us. Tonight — mere hours away! — we'll find out the identities of some of the lucky contestants advancing to the Top 24. How many exactly? Nobody knows. Hopefully, more than two. A handful would be nice. Half would be perfect, with the second group of 12 to be announced on Wednesday. The commercials foreshadow rooms of nail-biting hopefuls waiting on a verdict (been there, done that), and with two hours allotted, we'll undoubtedly see plenty of tears — along with our share of cheers. Meanwhile, back on the East Coast, Adam Lambert is expected to make an appearance at New York Fashion Week, supporting designer duo the Blonds, who have created otherworldly ensembles for the likes of Katy Perry, Rihanna and Beyoncé (check out the Blonds' 2009 spring collection). According to Just Jared, "a special model will be opening the show." Hmm … who could it be? And what will Adam wear?! – Shirley Halperin Follow @IdolTracker on Twitter Photo: Adam Lambert shows his style at the Grammys, Jan. 31, 2010. Credit: Gabriel Bouys /AFP/Getty Images |
Fantasia OKd to return to the stage by her doctor Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:56 AM PST If you've got a ticket to see Fantasia in "The Color Purple," we have good news: her doctor has approved her return to the Pantages Theatre stage in Hollywood beginning Tuesday night. Health issues have kept Fantasia and Miss Celie (the lead character of the musical) apart in the past, but Fantasia's manager, Brian Dickens, told The Times on Monday that the "American Idol" winner can return to work. Our sister blog, Culture Monster, has the details. – Maria Elena Fernandez (follow me on Twitter @writerchica) Follow Idol Tracker on Twitter @idoltracker. Seven ways to breathe new life into ‘Idol’ Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:56 AM PST As we near the semifinals and, soon after, the Top 12, the sensation that most "American Idol" diehards experience right around now — equal parts anticipation and dread — is starting to creep up on us. Sure, we love this show, but even with the addition of Ellen DeGeneres and the future exit of Simon Cowell, the "Idol" formula sometimes feels, for lack of a more subtle word, stale (though Monday's announcement to reveal part of the Top 24 earlier than usual is a good start). With that in mind, we gave some serious thought — but mostly not serious — to a few simple changes that Fox and the "Idol" producers could institute pretty much immediately (well, all except No. 3) that might breathe new life into the franchise. 1) Secret alumni duet partner. Have the contestants draw knives "Top Chef" style to determine which "Idol" alumnus they have to duet with. Sure, one person could end up with a Jennifer Hudson or a Melinda Doolittle to carry them through, but another may get stuck with Sanjaya or the Chicken Little-ish Kevin Covais. The two shows do share a sound stage after all. What could be easier than having the eliminated "Idol" contestant join the ousted pro dancer for a second chance at ballroom victory? 3) New judges panel: Gene Simmons, Snoop Dogg and Cyndi Lauper. Also replace Ryan Seacrest with Conan O'Brien. … and if there needs to be a fourth judge, we nominate "Jersey Shore's" Snooki. As for the rest of this motley crew, Simmons replaces Howard Stern as the king of harsh (but with the music cred to back it up), Snoop Dogg takes Randy-like one-liners to new heights, and Lauper plays the kooky card with a heavy New York accent. And the host, can't you hear it? "CoCo… out!" 4) Use former Idols as mentors. We're serious about this one. No one knows the "Idol" experience more intimately than the stars who've come out of the show. So let Carrie Underwood take the reins on country week, allow Chris Daughtry to guide the contestants through the rock canon and have Fantasia or Constantine Maroulis lead the pack during Broadway week. 5) Eliminate group numbers entirely. Instead, invite the cast of "Glee" to perform for the studio audience every week. 6) New instrument allowance. New rule: in addition to the standard guitar or piano accompaniment, contestants may now opt to play the video game "Rock Band" simultaneously. 7) Theme weeks to consider: Steely Dan Week, Wig Week, Sibling Rivalry Week, Barbershop Quartet Week, Pajama Night… Most of these are self-explanatory, but we do have a few special guest requests: Noel and Liam Gallagher as mentors for Sibling Rivalry week, Mariah Carey for pajama night and Barbershop Quartet Week must feature the 'Nard Dog himself, Ed Helms, with a special appearance by his group "Hear Comes Treble." Do you have better ideas? Let's hear them! – Shirley Halperin Follow @IdolTracker on Twitter Photo: Kiss' Gene Simmons performs at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in 2007. ‘Idol’ to announce part of Top 24 on Tuesday Posted: 16 Feb 2010 09:56 AM PST "American Idol" has announced that some of The Chosen for this season's Top 24 will actually be announced on Tuesday night's show — instead of the traditional "Green Mile" episode. How many more changes can an "Idol" heart take? No more Paula Abdul. New judge Ellen DeGeneres. No more Simon Cowell. And now only some contestants will walk the Green Mile? Or is the Green Mile gone with Paula? The "Green Mile" walk to the judge's table to learn your fate — have you made it to the live shows? — is a tradition on "Idol." The episode is known as such by the "Idol" production team and is named for the storied last walk of those on death row. "Idol" fans know it well. They've seen the likes of Adam Lambert walk and walk and walk to ultimately receive life-changing news. And they've seen other popular singers — remember Atlanta's homeless boy Josiah Lemming? — walk the "mile" to be severely disappointed. This year, it's going to work a little differently. The remaining "Hollywood Week" contestants will take the stage in Tuesday's episode's to perform their final solos in front of the four judges. But, for the first time in "Idol" history, some of the Top 24 finalists will receive their good news right then and there. No long walks toward judgment for them. Then, on Wednesday, the judges will reveal the rest of the Top 24. And then it's your turn, America. – Maria Elena Fernandez (follow me on Twitter @writerchica) Follow Idol Tracker on Twitter @idoltracker.
