Posted: 09 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST Its hard to believe when we first met Jim Verraros, he was only 19 years old. The Season 1 finalist is celebrating his 27th birthday today! Many people remember Jim as the contestant who was fluent in American Sign Language because both of his parents are deaf. Jim performed on the first ever semifinals show and advanced to the Top 10 with his performance of When I Fall in Love by Nat King Cole. Although Jim was eliminated during the Top 10s Motown Week, he went on to have a successful career in music. In 2004, he released an album entitled Unsaid and Understood. The indie-CD won an Out Music Award for Outstanding New Recording Debut Male in June of 2004. On April 26, 2005, Jim released his mainstream debut album, Rollercoaster. The album garnered a Tp 20 Billboard Dance Hit with You Turn It On. The song Youre Getting Crazy was also a breakout hit. This past year has been an exciting one for Jim, who got married on September 6, 2009 in his home state of Illinois. Happy Birthday, Jim! Ellen DeGeneres: ‘I’d be fine with just the three of us’ Posted: 09 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST New judge Ellen DeGeneres hasn't done many interviews in advance of her "Idol" debut tonight, but she did speak with "Extra's" Mario Lopez and told him that, despite the never-ending stream of rumors, she would "be fine if it was just the three of us." Ellen also added that in Simon's absence, maybe she could fill the mean quota. "Maybe I'll be that person," she joked. "I doubt it." But on a more serious matter, Ellen insisted that rumors of potential replacements are just that at this stage. "You keep hearing these names out there, [but] it hasn't gone out to anyone. No one has been approached yet." Still, Ellen did reveal that she has "a couple of people in mind," though she was tight-lipped about who those contenders might be, "More funny is good," she said. According to Deadline.com's Nikki Finke, Ellen is "not in favor" of Howard Stern. We'll be live-tweeting tonight's episode on East Coast time and would love to hear your reactions to Ellen's debut. Today in ‘Idol:’ Ellen’s debut! Posted: 09 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST Well, the day has finally arrived! After months of anticipation, Ellen DeGeneres takes Paula Abdul's seat Tuesday for the first installment of Hollywood Week. Along with the new judge are a new table, new cups and a flipped-around seating arrangement, with Simon Cowell positioned on the far left, followed by Ellen, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson. The grueling "Idol" boot camp means all four judges have their work cut out for them, but it's 52-year-old Ellen who's pulling double TV show duty. While she shifted her schedule to accommodate Hollywood Week (which may account for the rumored testiness over Simon's apparent tardiness), her typical day goes something like this: She arrives in Burbank for her own talk show at 10 a.m., which normally tapes at 5 p.m., then heads over to "Idol" auditions in Hollywood, where she could be sequestered until midnight. That's a long day, people. So let's keep that in mind if Ellen isn't her usual bubbly, happy-go-lucky self Tuesday. Speaking for herself, Ellen appeared on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM show earlier Tuesday and talked about her alleged feud with Cowell: "I think he's a funny guy, and I think he's a smart guy. But he's gonna be a challenge. He's Simon and I'm me and we're both completely different people." – Shirley Halperin Follow @IdolTracker on Twitter Photo: Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson judge "American Idol's" Hollywood Week. Denver auditioner’s golden ticket to nowhere Posted: 09 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST As we enter the Hollywood-week round of the competition, word is starting to trickle out about golden-ticket holders who never even made it to California. One such hopeful, Seattle's Danelle Hayes, who wowed the judges in Denver with her gravelly rendition of Melissa Etheridge's "The Only One," is among the unfortunate few, according to the Seattle Times. Fox confirmed to the paper that Hayes, a karaoke host and mom of one who had a teary tryout, did not compete in the Hollywood round, though offered no further details. Originally, 181 were stamped to go through to Hollywood, but the official "American Idol" site only Of course, there could be any number of reasons for the absence of Hayes and the handful of others we're likely to see. It may have been a personal matter, perhaps a professional affiliation that wasn't revealed at the time. Surely, we'll find out soon enough. For now, let's revisit her standout moment.

The new Simon Cowell: Howard Stern? Posted: 09 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST We're one step closer to finding a successor to Simon Cowell, and according to reports, it's looking more and more like 6-foot-5 shock jock Howard Stern may take the seat. On his Sirius satellite radio program on Monday, Stern told listeners that he's seriously considering leaving radio entirely to take the "Idol" gig. "There's not a better job Surprising? Absolutely. Not just because Stern might abandon the medium that's made him a millionaire several times over, but what's even harder to grasp is that he may leave his beloved New York City! So how would Stern do out here in Cali? And could his unfiltered, often brutal honesty actually work on America's most popular show? What do you think? – Shirley Halperin Follow @IdolTracker on Twitter Photo: Howard Stern. Credit: Associated Press |
Posted: 09 Feb 2010 05:54 PM PST We recently sat down with Season 8 finalist Allison Iraheta for a video interview (portions to be posted later today) and were surprised — nee, horrified — to learn that yours truly, along with much of the "Idol"-loving world and Ryan Seacrest, have all been pronouncing her last name wrong! We discovered this by having Allison do the standard sign-off, so there must be radio listeners out there who also have taken notice. Still, it's been nearly a year since she first graced the Hollywood stage, you'd think at some point it would have been corrected on a wider scale, even if she had gotten used to the, er, misnomer. Check out our good-natured exchange with Miss (Eye)-ra-heat-a. And on behalf of all those still in the dark, our apologies, Allison.
