Happy Birthday, Lindsey Cardinale!

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 05:50 PM PST

Season 4s Top 12 finalist, Lindsey Cardinale, celebrates her 25th birthday today. Only 19 years old when the Ponchatoula, Louisiana native auditioned for American Idol, Lindsey showed her smoky vocals singing songs like I Dont Want to Miss a Thing and Knock on Wood. Since her time on American Idol, Lindsey has pursued music, going down the country music route. She released two singles, Drive and Nothin Like a Dream and continues to perform shows around the southern part of the U.S. In fact, Lindsey will be celebrating her birthday in New Mexico today and tomorrow by playing two shows in Red River, and next Saturday she will play a gig in her hometown of Ponchatoula.

“The whole ‘American Idol’ experience absolutely made me stronger,” Lindsey wrote on her MySpace page. “I knew something great was going to come out of it, and now, two years later, I have so many opportunities on my plate. I would never have had that chance had I not decided to go to that first audition. I learned a lot on that show, not only about professionalism, but I also learned that this business isn’t always a walk in the park; it’s hard work and long days.”

Happy Birthday, Lindsey!

Carrie Underwood’s Movie Role

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 05:50 PM PST

Season 4’s American Idol and five-time Grammy award winner Carrie Underwood has landed a supporting role in her first studio movie Soul Surfer. The inspirational film is based on the autobiography of 19-year-old champion surfer Bethany Hamilton, who, for over six years, has defied all odds to compete and win professional championships after losing her arm in a shark attack at age thirteen. Carrie will play Sarah Hill, a church youth leader. Filming is to take place in February. She showed off her acting chops during Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special last December.

The film also stars Academy Award winner Helen Hunt as Bethanys mother Cheri, Golden Globe nominee Dennis Quaid as Bethanys father Tom, and Young Artist Award winner AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany Hamilton. The cast also includes Lorraine Nicholson (as Alana Blanchard) and Kevin Sorbo (as Holt Blanchard).

Carrie has been extremely busy lately. She collected her fifth Grammy award last Sunday and performed in a Michael Jackson tribute. This Sunday, Carrie will sing the National Anthem at footballs biggest event of the year.

From small-town farm girl to superstar, Carrie has made quite the transformation. Check out her evolving style in our transformation gallery.

Simon Cowell: rumor control

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 05:50 PM PST

Since every other day there seems to be a new rumor about who might potentially replace Simon Cowell on the future "American Idol," we thought we'd gather them all in one place, just to see how long this list could get.

The latest name bandied about? Howard Stern, who recently hinted on his Sirius radio program that he had been contacted by the producers of a major television show, though he wasn't too jazzed about the prospect. More on that from our Ministry of Gossip brethren.

He joins a handful of internationally-known contenders, but could any of these celebrities fill Cowell's shoes? Who would be your pick for Simon's successor?

Jaime Foxx

Elton John

Kelly Clarkson offers her two cents on record label CEO’s defense of Taylor Swift’s Grammy performance

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 05:50 PM PST

The Taylor Swift Grammy Awards hoopla — the one concerning her pitchy performance, not the four trophies she took home Sunday night — simply will not die down, and now the original "American Idol" Kelly Clarkson is taking issue with comments that Big Machine Records Chief Executive Scott Borchetta made in Swift's defense.

Kelly took to her blog after Borchetta declared, "This is not 'American Idol.' This is not a competition of
getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a
true artist and writer and communicator. It's not about that
technically perfect performance."

Here's her take that response:

Wow …..Dear Scott Borchetta,

I understand defending your artist obviously because I have done the
same in the past for artists I like, including Taylor, so you might see
why its upsetting to read you attacking American Idol for producing
simply vocalists that hit 'the high notes'. Thank you for that 'Captain
Obvious' sense of humor because you know what, we not only hit the high
notes, you forgot to mention we generally hit the 'right' notes as
well. Every artist has a bad performance or two and that is
understandable, but throwing blame will not make the situation at hand
any better. I have been criticized left and right for having shaky
performances before (and they were shaky) and what my manager or label
executives say to me and the public is "I'll kick butt next time" or
"every performance isn't going to be perfect" ……I bring this up because
you should take a lesson from these people and instead of lashing out
at other artists (that in your 'humble' opinion lack true artistry),
you should simply take a breath and realize that sometimes things won't
go according to plan or work out and that's okay.

Sincerely,

One of those contestants from American Idol who only made it because of her high notes

Carrie Underwood lands a movie role

Posted: 05 Feb 2010 05:50 PM PST

Underwood

Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has scored her first supporting role in the upcoming film "Soul Surfer," the story of Bethany Hamilton, who, at 13, lost her arm to a tiger shark bite, vowed to continue surfing and went on to become a champion surfer.

The inspirational story was the subject of a documentary, 2007's "The Heart of a Soul Surfer," directed by Becky Baumgartner, and a bestselling book, "Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family and Fighting to Get Back on the Board," which will serve as the basis for the screenplay. The feature film version stars AnnaSophia Robb as Bethany with Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid playing her parents. Carrie's character is Sarah Hill, a church youth leader.

Filming starts this month. On Sunday, Carrie will perform the national anthem at Super Bowl XLIV.
