Is an ‘Idol’ dream team reunion in the works?

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:46 PM PST

_RAY9883

Reunited, would it feel so good? That's the key question when considering the future of "American Idol" and its network twin, "The X Factor," and we asked it of Randy Jackson:

We have a theory that — with Cowell leaving, Paula Abdul being a free agent for now and (as reported) you signing a three-year extension in 2006 — the original "Idol" dream team could reunite on "The X-Factor." Care to respond?

You know, there's a song by the Fray that I really love. It's called "Never Say Never."

Think about it: Could there be a bigger Cowell coup? Plus, why mess with the formula? As the age-old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So while we all debate a couple dozen potential successors to Simon's seat, let's consider the possibility that the judging dream team could simply migrate to "X." Then what happens to our favorite show? And to Ryan Seacrest? If all three original judges jumped ship, would you follow?

Five more questions with Randy Jackson

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:46 PM PST

Ai_02-randy-green_0149_1

It was so nice to catch up with Randy Jackson the other day and gain a little insight into his own open-ended future (read the story here). Of course, there was plenty more to talk about: like Paula Abdul's next move ("She's got some surprises going on," he said, "people will definitely be seeing a lot of her!"), this weekend's Grammy Awards ("It's all about Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift"), and his new favorite band (that he also happens to manage), North Carolina's Paper Tongues. Here, five more interesting tidbits from our interview with Dawg, the talent hunter — and a follow-up.

In so many of your interviews for Season 9, you declare that "a girl's gonna take it." Is there some orchestration on the part of the producers, consciously or not, to cast a certain way? Because you'd think we would see a lot more theatrical, Adam Lambert types, or Kris Allen-like singer-songwriters during these auditions, but we really haven't.

Not at all. First off, Adam Lambert is an anomaly. So the people who watch "Glee" or
go to Broadway shows looking for an Adam Lambert type, he
is in no way your typical theater star. He's a slice above. His talent is bigger than Broadway. He's also very different from everyone who's ever auditioned for "Idol." So you're not
gonna see another Adam Lambert. Still, there were some theater types that
showed up, and we had a tremendous amount of singer-songwriters try out, because Kris won. But I'm pulling for a girl to win because I want to even the balance. Allison was great last year and came in third, but I want to see a male-female finale. Fight it to the death, come on!

You've been pretty critical of both Kris' and Adam's debuts. Do you think they're rushing these albums out too fast?

No. The problem with the records is not the time it takes to make them, but who they're made for. It's like this: You come on this show, you have a great voice, talent, and people voting for you to stay — those people are your public. Have you figured out what they like? Because they have already decided by voting for you, so give them what they want. Pay attention and be sensible about it, but you can't go in five directions, either. That will completely fragment the audience you've built up. Bottom line: If it's good, they'll buy it, like they bought Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas and Susan Boyle, who's sold over 3 million albums in two months. I wish these people would listen to our critique. We are the
industry professionals, after all. We've been doing this at the top of the game
for a long time and we have great wisdom to impart.

Cowell's announcement has really dominated the news, but some contend that he seems bored at the auditions, like he's checked out –

I don't think that's the case at all. These auditions get very long. I've glanced at a few of the episodes and I'm thinking, "You're looking sweaty and beat down, dawg!" If Simon hadn't made that announcement, people probably wouldn't be saying that.

Your assistant does your Facebook and Twitter, are you not a fan of social networks?

Honestly, I don't even have the time to do it. I've got family, three kids, 18 jobs … but it's just not my thing. It's funny, I had this conversation the other night with Ryan Seacrest, who does his own Twitter. He says the craziest stuff on there. He'll be twittering during station breaks on the show. I'm like, "Dude, are you crazy? Is whatever you're writing so important? Can't you wait until the show is over?"

Here we are knee-deep in audition episodes discussing contestants
who are either enthralling or horrifying, but rarely have we heard
about your own "Idol" audition. How many callbacks did it take before
you got the judging gig?

It was a quite a few meetings over some months. I met with Cowell, who
I'd known about just from being an [artists and repertoire] guy. The two of us met with
the producers, then with the Fox people and the Fremantle people. There
were definitely some audition-type things, but to get the job, I didn't
have to dance or stand on my head or deliver one of those Ryan Seacrest
lines, "We'll let you know the results … in a minute."

But you were really gunning for it?

Yeah. I was a little of both minds. Like, oh my God, this would be great! And also, I'm not sure exactly what this is.

‘American Idol’ guest judges vs. regular judges

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:46 PM PST

Are the guest judges this season ready to rumble or is there some editing trickery at hand? On Tuesday night, we had Kara DioGuardi and Katy Perry "downright catty," as host Ryan Seacrest referred to their behavior.

Last night, Neil Patrick Harris took on Simon Cowell in a "showdown." Again, those are Seacrest's words. Real? Or editing magic?

In any case, it's fun to watch. As if Harris needed more public support, the triple-threat performer was not shy about disagreeing with Cowell or calling him out.

A few examples:

To one contestant, Harris said: "I thought you were great!" To which Cowell replied: "Got absolutely nothing out of that audition, I'm afraid."

Then Harris told one contestant: "I found it really boring!" And Simon retorted: "A bit rude."

A funny montage of the two of them ensued with Cowell rolling his eyes after a contestant told Harris that she loves him. Did he really? Or was that cut from another moment in the long hot Dallas day?

"I'm scared to disagree with you," Harris told Simon at another point. "Geez, Louise, invite a guest judge on…" The rest, unfortunately for us, was inaudible.

As far as DioGuardi and Perry were concerned, Perry at one point threatened to throw Coke in DioGuardi's face and DioGuardi in one instance cried: "We used to be friends!"

During a phone interview with Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show Wednesday, DioGuardi said she thought it was all "really funny" and she was surprised that "people actually think I was upset about that."

One person who didn't buy it was Avril Lavigne, who also guest-judged on Tuesday night and was in Seacrest's studio during the phone call.

"It was a little awkward, but it was kinda funny."

Then she complained that the producers edited her to be a mean girl by only showing her responding to singers she didn't like.

DioGuardi defended her: "I'm gonna go on the record: You were definitely not mean."

See? All this judges' sparring stuff, well, that could be in an editor's imagination, too.

‘Idol’ in Dallas: originality (and NPH) rules

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:46 PM PST

AI9-Dallas-BTS-090825-0194

Thankfully, Wednesday's Dallas auditions episode was far more stimulating than Tuesday's hour of (mainly) mediocre hopefuls. And you can thank three initials for that: NPH. On the other hand, Joe Jonas, who guest-judged the second half, was a man of few words, and even less airtime, which just goes to show: sitting on that panel doling out advice is not as easy as it looks!

So let's hand it to Neil Patrick Harris. The "How I Met Your Mother" star was gentle, yet critical, enthusiastic and professional, just the way we like our guest judges. And the talent was impressive too. So much so that we had a tough time choosing a top five. Giddyap for our picks….

Christian Spear: We've nicknamed this 16-year-old, cancer-beating contestant "No fear Spear." Christian was the final auditioner to go in front of the judges, and she left a lasting impression with her version of Etta James' "All I Can Do Is Cry." No doubt this girl can emote! And at her age, we could be looking at another Jordin Sparks.

Kimberly Carver: We questioned Kimberly's style at first (those shoes made no sense), but this Texas gal surprised us with her rich, pitch-perfect tone — on an original, no less! Her song sounded like a blast from the past, but somehow, she felt current. A winning combination!

Todrick Hall: Another contestant impresses with an original, and this guy came very well prepared with instantly hummable shout-outs for all. Todrick has a bit of a show biz past, having appeared alongside Fantasia in "The Color Purple," but is poised to break out on his own and we're all for it!

Maegan Wright: Here's the kind of sun-kissed girl we expected to see come out of L.A. — someone with exceptional talent who isn't stressing this one audition, but sings with natural ease. Simon's only criticism of Maegan, whose teary back story was that she's a product of divorce, was her couldn't-care-less choice of wardrobe, which also turned into a positive. Hey Simon, that's what stylists are for!

Lloyd Thomas: Big and burly with a buttery rich voice, this smooth-talking dock worker has all the makings of an "Idol" underdog with a taste of victory. If he's the new Velvet Teddy Bear, we're "Overjoyed" to have him.

Honorable mention: Erica Rhodes (see our separate post on the former "Barney" kid).

What were your favorite moments from the Dallas auditions?

Erica Rhodes: ‘Barney’ kid with a whip-smart strategy

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:46 PM PST

Erica_rhodes

The contestant who turned the most heads tonight? Dallas auditioner Erica Rhodes, who was a proud "Barney & Friends" kid in her youth but took her turn in front of the judges wearing a dominatrix get-up and working a dino whip to accompany her gutsy rendition of En Vogue's "Free Your Mind."

In a sea of gimmicks, it was a smart move and, with the talent to back it up, we anticipate Erica will go far.

Amazingly, the 1999 "Barney" gig was not just Erica's big break, it was her only one. At least until now. According to her IMDB resume, other than a glorified extra role in the 2009 indie film "Going Home," Erica's showbiz experience is in the dance world. She trained at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and was a member of the now defunct Dallas Desperados. She also studied broadcast journalism at Dallas' Southern Methodist University, so there's plenty to fall back on, not that Erica will need to.
