Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson to Perform Tribute at Grammy Awards

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:44 AM PST

American Idol Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood and Season 3 finalist Jennifer Hudson will join Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, and Usher to sing along with the voice of Michael Jackson in a moving Jackson tribute at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. The award show will take place Sunday, January 31. This very special Grammy Moment will feature the never-before-seen 3-D mini-movie for “Earth Song” that was created by Michael Jackson as the centerpiece of his much anticipated “This Is It” tour, but was never seen by the public prior to this Grammy performance. The 3-D film was created to support the performance of “Earth Song,” an original composition and a No. 1 hit for Jackson. The song has a strong theme about the future of the planet, and Jackson saw it as a unique opportunity to deliver a message to millions of people who would have seen him on tour.

Four-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood is nominated for two awards on Sunday, including Best Female Country Vocal Performance for Just A Dream and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for I Told You So with Randy Travis. Last year, Jennifer Hudson was nominated for four Grammy Awards and won one for Best R&B Album.

What other Idol alumni are nominated for Grammy Awards this year? Find out!

An ‘Idol’ Top 24 disqualification already?

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:44 AM PST

The Internet has been abuzz the last couple days over an "American Idol" contestant we never got to see. Michael Lynche, of St. Petersburg, Fla., who auditioned in Orlando, was first rumored to have made the Top 24, but after his father Marque Sr. confirmed the news to a local paper, he was allegedly disqualified. Now, the family, which includes brother Marque Lynche Jr. (who also auditioned for "Idol" in 2004, but saw his journey end just shy of the Top 12), has disconnected the home phone and otherwise made itself unavailable, according to a report from the St. Petersburg Times.

Fox will not comment on Lynche's potential disqualification, and the network's policy is never to reveal the Top 24 before the episode airs (on Feb. 17), but it wasn't all that long ago (a year, to be exact) when another shoe-in, Joanna Pacitti, was unceremoniously ejected from the Top 24, though her offense was failing to disclose a conflict of interest.

So what exactly are the rules for those who've made it to Hollywood and beyond? One former contestant (who wished to remain anonymous) tells Idol Tracker, "You couldn't say anything to anybody. It was sort of understood that you could tell family if you made it, but they put the fear of God in you with all kinds of fines and hefty 'breach of contract' fees." Apparently those ran in the millions, which should be enough incentive for any parents to keep their yaps shut.

On the other hand, says this source, it's the producers' game. If they wanted to forgive his father's transgression and allow Michael Lynche to compete, taking full advantage of the inherent drama that comes with the unknown, they can. "They make the rules and they can break them."

Check out Michael's golden ticket interview below.

‘Idol’ Tendencies: The Undeserving

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 01:44 AM PST

Undeserving-9667 hi res

If you've seen any of the commercials for "American Idol" Season 9, then you've undoubtedly heard The Undeserving, a band from Toledo, Ohio, whose uplifting song "Something To Hope For" is the soundtrack to this year's ad campaign. As it turns out, brothers Clay and Kyle Kirchenbauer (vocals/piano and drums, respectively) are devoted "Idol" worshipers in their own right (look no further than their version of "Pants on the Ground"), but possibly developing an unhealthy fascination with Season 3's John Stevens.

Indeed, you can learn a lot about a person through their 'Idol' Tendencies. We put the brothers to the test…

1) Who's your favorite Idol of all-time?

Kyle: Jason Castro. He seemed to be a genuinely nice, appreciative person. He also had really unique hair, so I related to him well. Felt like we were brothers a little. If mine keeps growing, I could have those dreads soon.

2) Audition episodes: Hate them or love them?

Kyle: Can't watch them. I'm just not a fan of all the cinematic drama, overreaction and the showcasing of people with no vocal ability, smarts or common sense.   Clay: I actually find the beginning more interesting than the finals, but that's only because I like seeing the not-so-smart people try their hand at singing.

3) Of all the "Idol" alumni, who appears on your iPod most often and what song?

Kyle: Carrie Underwood's "So Small." Huge chorus. Plus, she's from a small town like us and she is really cute.

4) Name a finalist who should have advanced further but didn't?

Kyle: John Stevens. That guy had class. Long live the Leprechauns!

5) Who's your favorite judge?

Kyle: Simon. Honesty and constructive criticism — it's very important to have someone in this line of work give you both, and more important to listen to it. Kara seems to be quite opinionated as well, and I like that about her.

6) Which judge do you most often agree with?

Both: Simon — he's always right!

7) What's your favorite "Idol" saying?

Both: Well, after last week, it's "Pants On the Ground." We got 200,000 YouTube hits for our spoof on the song in two days!

8) Do you vote?

Clay: We voted like crazy for John Stevens back in Season 3. When he didn't win we got so depressed, we didn't eat for days. We haven't voted since.

9) When did you start watching the show?

Kyle: My parents and sisters have always watched it. I suspected it would last for at least a decade. Growing up as a musician in a tiny town it's cool to watch other kids in similar situations make it.

10) Hottest female contestant ever?

Kyle: Brooke White. Her smile was divine. Also, we got to spend time with Diana DeGarmo a couple years ago. I really wish I had just asked for her number. She was a sweet gal.

11) William Hung, Tatiana Del Toro — who's the best of the worst?

Clay: Hung. He wasn't annoying, just cashing in on his dorkiness. Gotta respect that.

12) If you were to audition for "Idol," what song would you choose?

Clay: "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba

13) Name three people who would make great "Idol" mentors.

Clay: Let's see… Any one of the Spice Girls, my dog Eisley can sing with the best of them, and Bob Knight.

14) What's a song you think the producers should use next as "you're going home" music?

Kyle: "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish" from the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." This song wouldn't actually work for the show; it's just a hilarious song. (If you have to explain why it's funny, it's not funny.)

15) David Cook or David Archuleta?

Clay: David Hasselhoff
