Happy Birthday, Kristy Lee Cook!

Posted: 20 Jan 2010 05:42 PM PST

Season 7s Kristy Lee Cook celebrated her birthday yesterday. The 26 year old was the country gal from Oregon who sold her horse to pay for her flight to audition for American Idol. Fortunately, she made it all the way to Top 7 and was eliminated during Mariah Carey week.

While competing on American Idol, Kristy Lee faced many challenges. During the first live show, she kicked off the night with Rescue Me, but she had bronchitis. Then, during the Top 9 week, Kristy Lee Cook fell in the bottom three with her beloved roommates: Ramiele Malubay and Brooke White. Although she fell in the bottom 3 four times throughout her run on American Idol, she had many highs too, including the week she sang God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood. Simon called this song choice a very smart move.

Soon after the Season 7 finale, Kristy Lee signed with Arista Nashville and 19 Recordings. Three days after she completed the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2008, KLC released her album Why Wait. The album charted at #8 on the US Country Charts and at #49 of all US albums. On October 25, 2008, Kristy Lee made her Grand Ole Opry debut. Although Kristy has since parted ways with her record label, shes looking around for a new company to create records with.

Kristys love of horses hasnt changed. In fact, she founded the Kristy Lee Horse Heaven Foundation, which specializes in bringing joy to the lives of horses in need.

Happy Birthday, KLC!

Ruben Studdard offers studio time to General Larry Platt

Add American Idol Ruben Studdard to the long list of Larry Platt devotees. The Season 2 winner tells Idol Tracker that he, like the rest of the country, was so instantly hooked on "Pants on the Ground" that he'd like to offer the General some time in the vocal booth. "He should come to Birmingham, Alabama, and get in the studio,"  Ruben says. "I'll put him on, we'll make a record, call it 'Pants on the Flo!' That song is gonna be a hit! I can't wait to get my first copy!"

Ruben is currently holed up in Birmingham's Creation Station working on his next musical project, and he, along with the 30th anniversary cast of  "Ain't Misbehavin" (he starred as Fats Waller), is also nominated for a Grammy for best musical show album. Which begs the question, will we be seeing any "Pants on the Ground" remixes on next year's Grammy ballot?

Randy Jackson and Jimmy Fallon jam to ‘Pants on the Ground’

Posted: 20 Jan 2010 05:42 PM PST

Jimmy Fallon is proving to be the biggest "American Idol" nerd of all! Welcoming Randy Jackson to Tuesday's show (with a stellar intro of Journey's "Girl Can't Help It," we might add), Fallon wasted no time bringing up his favorite auditioner: Atlanta's General Larry Platt. Of course, Jackson was already hip to Fallon's earlier Neil Young version of "Pants on the Ground" (Fallon even had Howard Stern fooled), and perhaps he was itching to play the bass, because when Fallon invited the "Idol" judge to jam along with house band the Roots, Jackson was all too willing. Check out their funktastic spin on the viral hit that just won't go away, "Pants on the Ground."

‘Idol’ Chicago auditions: slim pickings

Posted: 20 Jan 2010 05:42 PM PST

AI9-Chicago-Judging-090831-0382
It was slim pickings in Chicago — only 13 contestants went through to Hollywood, most of them girls — and for once, it was Ryan Seacrest who looked bored. Even fainting spells (Amy Lang, pictured) and crying fits couldn't amp up the energy on this episode. And to think, this is the city that brought us Jennifer Hudson and Mandisa. Still, Shania Twain was entertaining in all her guest judge goofiness.  And there were a handful of highlights, such as:

Katelyn Epperly: Randy praised her smoky vocals on Duffy's "Syrup and Honey," and with so many soundalikes (he says that like it's a bad thing), she managed to stand out from the pack and impress an especially tough panel.

Charity Vance: This sweet thing was no Fantasia, but she competently delivered "Summertime" and the judges responded in kind. Still, will that little voice shine in such fierce competition? Time will tell.

Angela Martin: She had auditioned twice before, made it to Hollywood and all the way to the Top 50, then had to bolt due to a court date. To her credit, Angela's had a rough couple of years and her moving version of Mary J. Blige's "Just Fine" put those emotions on full display. Will the third try be the charm?

John Park: Shania Twain was plain old tongue-tied in the presence of this Asian hottie. She complemented his "beautiful bottom end" on Donny Hathaway's "If I Ever Leave You Baby," and we're loving his overall demeanor. John is already rumored to have made the Top 24, to which we say, hallelujah!

Honorable mentions: We agree with Simon that her rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" came off "a little indulgent," but Paige Dechausse shows promise, as does Marcus Jones, who wasn't given a special segment but delivered a soulful audition.
