Posted: 19 Jan 2010 09:42 AM PST During last weeks Atlanta auditions show, America was introduced to General Larry Platt, a 62 year old veteran who shared an original song he wrote entitled Pants on the Ground. The song has been sweeping the nation ever since, and many people have created videos of their covers of Pants on the Ground. Some covers are upbeat, some covers are touching, and others are just plain fun! Even Season 8 semi-finalist Alex Wagner-Trugman posted a wonderful acoustic cover of the song. Randy Jackson makes the talk-show rounds Posted: 19 Jan 2010 09:42 AM PST The one-man promotion machine that is Randy Jackson is hard at work making the talk-show rounds in New York this week. On Monday, Randy appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" and offered a few clues to this coming season, mainly reiterating his belief that a girl will take the crown on season 9. But other than declaring how much he misses Paula, or P.A., as he calls her, Jackson offered little insight as to who might replace Simon Cowell, saying only that "Simon will be fine. … He was looking for a new challenge, different things." More important, Letterman wondered aloud, "When will that Seacrest take a hike?" Ouch! For more of Randy on the couch (or stool), check out today's "Live With Regis and Kelly" (ABC, 9 a.m.) and "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" (NBC, 12:37 a.m.). – Shirley Halperin (Follow me on Twitter @shirleyhalperin) |
General Larry ‘Pants’ Platt: A ‘View’ from backstage Posted: 19 Jan 2010 09:42 AM PST Whether you found General Larry Platt's performance of "Pants on the Ground" on Monday's "The View" triumphant or painfully awkward, there's no doubt it was a pop-culture moment to be remembered. So what was the vibe like backstage? An observer tells Idol Tracker that Platt was "very nervous" before the show, which aired live on Martin Luther King Day (Platt was an activist and an acquaintance of the civil-rights leader), and even said a prayer prior to his grand entrance in front of the studio audience. As for how the ABC gabfest got its hands on the coveted booking when everyone and their mother (ourselves included) can't even leave a message on Platt's already-full voicemail: Apparently, they kept calling and he eventually picked up. (Goes to show, persistence usually pays off.) What did you guys think of the new, improved "Pants on the Ground"? And how about General Platt's makeover? Those were some crispy, brand-spanking-new designer jeans. Did hosts Sherri Shepherd and Elizabeth Hasselbeck handle the segment with sensitivity? Pipe in, folks. – Shirley Halperin (Follow me on Twitter @shirleyhalperin) Photo: Randy Jackson with Altanta auditioner General Larry Platt. Credit: Michael Becker / Fox |
Today in ‘Idol’: Chicago auditions, Adam Lambert on ‘Oprah’ Posted: 19 Jan 2010 09:42 AM PST It's all about Chicago today as "American Idol" season 9 auditions hit the Windy (and rainy) City. Tune in to Fox at 8 p.m. to get your fill of the good, the bad and the crazy as guest judge Shania Twain sits in on the panel. And Adam Lambert performs "Whataya Want from Me" on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today (check local listings). It marks Adam's first time at Harpo Studios (back in fall 2009, he was interviewed via Skype), and he's expected to touch on his American Music Awards performance and Simon Cowell's imminent departure from the show. Check out People.com for an adorable photo of Adam, with hair slicked back Elvis-style, and the Queen of Talk walking arm in arm. – Shirley Halperin (Follow me on Twitter @shirleyhalperin) |
‘Pants on the Ground’ fever strikes ‘The View’ and the Vikings Posted: 19 Jan 2010 09:42 AM PST
Forget Ellen and Simon. So far, this season of "American Idol" is all about "Pants on the Ground" Larry Platt. Today, the Atlanta civil-rights activist who marched with Martin Luther King Jr., appeared on "The View" to perform his instant hit. Asked by hosts Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck how it felt to see himself on national TV last week when "Idol" aired his catchy audition, Platt replied: "I got so happy … and it made me feel good, knowing that I wanna get these pants up!" We feel the birth of a movement that will transcend fashion. As Hasselbeck pointed out, "Pants on the Ground" is the new Minnesota Vikings locker-room anthem. (Watch the video.)
