‘Idol Chat’ to gab no more?

With Kimberly Caldwell embarking on a full-time singing career, and Justin Guarini also making the music rounds, it looks like the "American Idol" post-show gab fest "Idol Chat," which aired on the TV Guide Network as part of its "Reality Chat" series (and sometimes — confusingly — was named "Idol Wrap"), will rap no more. Caldwell, who was a co-host along with Guarini and former "Popstars" contestant Rosanna Tavares, hinted at the show's demise when I spoke to her a couple weeks back, and while a rep for the channel would only say that "no announcement of a new season has been made as of yet," a source tells Idol Tracker that the show is, in a word, "done."

It stands to reason that TV Guide Network's new programming direction will have its share of casualties — in 2009, it acquired the basic cable rights to HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and ABC's "Ugly Betty." Then again, the network scored big with "I Dreamed A Dream: the Susan Boyle Story," a one-hour special that aired on December 13 and drew nearly five million viewers, so it may want to reconsider its coverage of singer success stories spawned by reality TV. To that end, the rep added that the channel would love to keep working with Kimberly et al. on one-offs, specials and events, so maybe we'll still be seeing those alumni mugs on the "Idol" finale red carpet — or the Starbucks around the corner from the Nokia Theater.

What do you think? Would "Idol Chat" be missed?

The ‘Idol’ viewer: a breakdown

Despite the occasional ratings dip and gimmicky tricks (like having a Top 13 instead of 12 and season eight's wasted "judges' save"), for the past four seasons, "American Idol" has remained the most popular regularly scheduled show on television. That's according to Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research for Horizon Media Inc., an ad services firm whose business it is to break down and analyze those numbers. And the results may surprise you, but rather than a boring post about statistics, how about we make a multiple choice quiz out of it instead?

1. "American Idol" hit its audience peak when it averaged 30 million viewers. In what season did that happen?

A. Eight
B. One
C. Five
D. Seven

2. In season one, the median age of the "Idol" viewer was 31.9. What was it in season eight?

A. 44.2
B. 24.9
C. 37.1
D. The same

3. The highest rated demographic to watch Kris Allen and Adam Lambert duke it out in season eight?

A. Teens 12-17
B. Adults 18-49
C. Adults 35-64
D: Kids 2-11

4. Despite the arrival of David Archuleta in season seven, the under-12 crowd has diminished steadily over the past three years. What's the percentage drop-off of kids who watched in season five compared to season eight?

A. 15%
B. 28%
C. 52%
D. 37%

* * *
