Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:18 PM PDT On the very last day of the 50 city American Idols LIVE! 2009 tour, we caught up with the American Idol, Kris Allen. He reflected on the tour, opened up about his debut album, and talked about the fans. Many of the Idols have been battling bad colds during the last stretch of the tour, andKris was one of the hardest hit. Fortunately, he’s doing better now and hefeels good about ending the tour stronger and healthier than he was earlier this week. With only one performance left, Kris said he’s “going to miss singing for a lot of people every night. A lot of us will miss playing to big arenas. The Top 10 have been together for almost a year now, so it’s going to be really sad when we say goodbye. We’ve already started to make plans to meet up soon.” As the winner of Season 8, Kris has been juggling the tour with recording his debut album. And on top of it all he’s still a newlywed. “Katy’s been busy with her job, but she has been able to come to a couple of shows.” Kris waswilling to reveal some information about his upcoming album to us. The album willdropon November 17, 2009. “I’ve been able to write a little bit. We’re still working on it, and there’s still a lot of work left to do, but I’m excited about it. The single should be coming out very soon.” At this moment, Kris isn’t sure if he’ll … read more |

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:18 PM PDT September is a popular month for American Idol alumni birthdays. Check out the American Idol calendar to view all of the birthdays and events that occur this month. September 13 is Ejay Day’s birthday. Ejay was on the very first season of American Idol, making it to tenth place. He was able to join the semifinals after one contestant was disqualified for lying about his age. The Georgia native has performed for Muhammad Ali on a number of occassions, sang at the 2003 Tournament of Roses parade, and belted the National Anthem for many professional sports teams in Georgia. September 14 is Melissa McGhee’s birthday. The Season 5 contestant made it to 12th place on the show and never fell into the bottom three until her elimination during Stevie Wonder week. Despite forgettinga fewlyrics to her Stevie Wonder song, the judges thought it was her best performance yet. September 15 is Charles Grigsby’s birthday. This Season 2 contestant sang his way to 11th place on the show, but he got to join the Season 2 Top 10 on tour when he replaced Corey Clark. September 16 is Matthew Rogers’ birthday. Allison Iraheta: The ultimate interview, Part Four Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:18 PM PDT In the final part of this four-part interview, "American Idol" finalist Allison Iraheta talks about her final weeks on the show and this summer's "American Idols Live" tour. Read Part One here. Read Part Two here. Read Part Three here. Let's talk about some more of the songs you performed on "American Idol" this past season. When you had to pick a song from a movie, you went with Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." It's one of my all-time favorites, in my top five. Maybe number three. Did you see the movie "Armageddon" and do you remember hearing the song for the first time? Yup, and I remember crying like a baby. Since this is one of your all-time favorites, had you ever performed the song before? I had never performed the song, ever. I learned it just because, you know, you have a favorite song, you listen to it so many times, you learn it eventually. She's so amazing. I met her and I talked to her. She's just so great. I even told her "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" is one of my all-time favorites. I'm sure she loved hearing you say that. Let's talk about the song you chose when the theme was "Disco." You sang Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." I knew the song. Disco Week was so hard for me. Me singing disco? Not so much! I felt I definitely needed to change it up. I can't be doing the whole disco style. I can't. It was between "MacArthur Park" and "Hot Stuff." I did not connect with either of them, but I felt you can either do something that will show off your voice and be safe, which was "MacArthur Park," or you can do something and actually enjoy doing it and change it up and make it your own. So "Hot Stuff" was the one for me. Carrie Underwood sang "MacArthur Park," but when Ryan asked her what the song meant, she said she had no idea. It's something about a cake being in the rain. I don't know. You can't sing about cake. Then let's talk about the song you chose when the theme was rock 'n' roll. She didn't record the song originally, but when we think of "Cry Baby," we think of Janis Joplin. I grew up listening to Janis Joplin and I've sung "Piece of My Heart." "Cry Baby" is also one of my favorites. I do connect with that one, definitely. I don't regret doing it on the show. I thought that was one of my best performances. It's one of those songs I've always wanted to do. It was a perfect song for you, even if that was the week you were sent home. That same show, you performed a duet with Adam on Foghat's "Slow Ride." As soon as we found out we were going to be doing duets, I knew I wanted to sing with Adam. I mean, I wouldn't have minded doing it with Danny or Kris. I love them both. Adam and I were like, "Let's do this. Truck out.Let's do some craziness song." "Slow Ride" was the perfect one. Was it difficult to choose which song would make a great duet? There was a list and I was looking at the list and he was and I didn't know which one to choose. "What about this one?" "No, maybe not." "What about this one?" "Nah." Until he said, "All right, we have to do this one," and it was "Slow Ride" and I said, "Yeah, let's do it." Were you surprised how much praise you received for "Slow Ride"? I felt like I blanked out during that whole performance more than I usually blank out. I blank out on every single performance, but it was weird because I totally forgot about the judges. Every time I would blank out I would still have the judges in the back of my head, like watch out for the notes, but this one, I thought, "I don't even care. I'm just going to have fun. This is a whole different world." And after we did it, people went crazy. We knew we did awesome because it was just so much fun. Now that the season is over, do you still hold on to anything the judges said to you? I got good feedback most of the time. The whole personality thing with Simon, right now I feel like it's not a competition anymore. I am who I am. I mean, I was who I am throughout the whole show. We only have two seconds to talk after the judges do so it was hard for me to let people know who I was in those two seconds, but now people know who I am. So I'm always going to keep what the judges said to help me with my career further up ahead. They did know what they were talking about and every single one of them, I used [their comments] to help me with my other performances. I can sleep anywhere, bus or plane. – Fred Bronson Photo credit: Noel Vasquez / Getty Images Related: Allison Iraheta: Finding her groove Allison Iraheta: Showbiz beginnings Allison Iraheta: The early years Kris Allen: Showbiz beginnings Kris Allen: Finding his groove Kris Allen: The "Idol" chapter Adam Lambert: Showbiz beginnings Adam Lambert: Finding his groove |
Allison Iraheta: The ultimate interview, Part Three Posted: 16 Sep 2009 04:18 PM PDT In the third part of this four-part interview, "American Idol" finalist Allison Iraheta talks about her experience on the show. Read Part One here. Read Part Two here. You mentioned connecting with songs and it seems to me that you always connect with whatever song you are performing. Is that how it feels to you when you're singing? For me, choosing songs always had to be about connection. Obviously, it was kind of hard for me to do that on the show when you're being told to choose from a list and you don't know some of the songs that are on there; that was a toughie on the show. That was hard for me to do. When you connect with a song [it's through the] lyrics and the genre as well. For me, the song is always going to be something that will represent who I am. Sure. Singing songs like "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Hot Stuff" was weird. It's like you're given a role to do. You have to work with what you've got. I guess I do. I knew "Someone to Watch Over Me" already. I knew most of the songs in Rat Pack Week. I guess that comes from my parents listening to a very large variety of music — my dad listening to the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and my mom ABBA and it was totally different but through both of them combined, I learned different kinds of music. Ever since I was little I listened to different genres. It helped during the competition because I knew they were going to throw themes at me and I think maybe that's what helped from watching "Idol." I would ask, "What are they singing? Why are they singing about this?" And that's when I learned that they have to sing different genres each week. So that would be one of the things that actually helped prepare me for different kinds of music. Do you also know a lot of songs because you've been performing since you were a child? Yes. For example, the song I did during country week, "Blame It on Your Heart," I had been performing ever since I was 11. I used to do it just for fun at country clubs and parties where people actually enjoyed country music. I think that's also why I learned different kinds of songs because people would hire me along with a band and we would play at parties. They would ask for music and I would know a bunch of oldies and country music and for me, singing country I was like, "Oh, geez," but it was pretty cool and what matters the most is that people enjoy it. Obviously it's more important if you enjoy it, but it's pretty cool when you see people enjoying the music you're doing.
Oh, definitely. I already knew the song, but doing it on "Idol" where Kelly came from was pretty scary. But Hollywood Week is sort of like Hell Week. You don't get sleep. You have such a limited time to rehearse and I thought, "I already know this song. I think I can do something good with it because I've been singing it for a while now and it'll be much easier for me to get rest before tomorrow when I go out and sing this song than to stay up all night and learn a whole new one." And it went well. When it was down to a top 36, you performed Heart's "Alone," a song that we've heard on "Idol" before. Why do a song that so many other contestants have chosen? Carly Smithson, Ramiele Malubay and Carrie Underwood did it. Very scary, but what's pretty cool is that a lot of them are so very different and I found myself being pretty different as well, making it a tad bit easier to sing it. I was still scared. I knew Carrie sang the bejeezus out of it, but I just did what I did and it worked out great. During Michael Jackson week you sang one of his lesser-known songs, "Give in to Me." That was one of the songs I had never heard in my life. But Slash is on it and I thought that was pretty cool. I was going to do "Beat It" and I gave it to Anoop. He hated me after I gave it to him. I make fun of him now because we're a dysfunctional family and I tell him, "Anytime you need me to give you a song, Anoop, just call me up and I'd be glad to help." He just says, "Shut up." After I gave "Beat It" to Anoop, I was still a little off as to what song I was going to do. I was thinking of "Bad," "Thriller," I don't know. And then I was talking to Kris and he helped me out. He said, "There's a really good song. I'm hearing it right now, and you'd sound great on it." He showed it to me, and the first time I heard it, I fell in love with it. So I went for it. I learned it and it went great. Was this one of those times when two contestants wanted to do the same song – you wanted "Beat It" and so did Anoop? We both wanted to do it. The funny thing was that I didn't know he wanted to do it and I guess he didn't know I wanted to do it, so both of us said, "I'm going to do this one," until we found out that both of us wanted it. I told him, "You know, it's all good. You go ahead." He said, "Are you sure?" "Yeah." Adam helped me out on that one. They were throwing songs at me. I had no clue which one I wanted to do. I knew "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." I'd heard it plenty of times before, but he said I should do it. I had a lot of fun singing it. I kept it the way it was. I didn't want to change it at all, because it's one of those songs, like "Give in to Me," that was perfect the way it was. You don't want to change Motown. You don't want to touch that. I am definitely a huge fan. They're my inspiration. I grew up listening to No Doubt – their first album, the whole punk with ska. I grew up listening to that. It was really, really nice to do one of their songs on the show. No, because they were all rushing to get onstage. We had to leave and didn't get a chance. I got to see her perform "Just a Girl" and it was amazing as always. I know one theme week where you couldn't have chosen the same song as anyone else, since you were the only finalist born in the '90s. Yeah, that's what everybody was saying. It was pretty hard, just because '90s music was wack. Not so good. Everyone else was pretty lucky with their song choices. Still, you chose a great song for the "Year of Birth" theme – Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." I also already knew the song and I didn't know what else to do. It was a case of just do the song you already know. – Fred Bronson Photo credit: Irfan Khan / Los Angeles Times Related: Allison Iraheta: Showbiz beginnings Allison Iraheta: The early years Kris Allen: Showbiz beginnings Kris Allen: Finding his groove Kris Allen: The "Idol" chapter Adam Lambert: Showbiz beginnings Adam Lambert: Finding his groove |
